Barber in a surprising move has resigned. Barber, a professor of philosophy, said he was quitting bec& IJ.se of his desire to resume full time teaching. He also sighted his concern over his inability to obtain the funds needed and demanded for the college's essential programs and faculty aspirations. The 52 year old dean will probably assume full time teaching in the fall but will temporarily serve in his present capacity. In a letter of resignation last week Barber urged his replacement by Aug. 19. UVs Board of Trustees will act on his move next month. The A&S Plans and Policies Committee will appoint an interim consisting of faculty members and students to search for a new dean. According to the com-mittee, it could take up to six months to find Barber's replacement. Barber's action came after some criticism from some members of the A&S faculty. Last week the faculty of the Humanities Division gave him a vote of no confidence. In accepting the letter of resignation, UL A c a d e m i c vice president William E. Ekstrom p~aised Barber's career as dean. He noted the dean's "devoted service and his many significant contributions to the academic programs of the A&S College." Barber came to the UL after serving as an assistant and associate professor of philosophy at Tulane University for ten years. He received a doctoral degree from Yale University, a master's degree from Indiana University, and a bachelor's degree from Ohio University.
