But the real story of the drama played out in rustic Nippert Stadium last Saturday was that No. 1, Howard Stevens. He was t.he star. My roommate tells me you could have an Ali ... Frazier fight withou1t Joe Frazier but not without Ali. It jus1· wouldn't be the same. Similarly, without Howard Stevens the game last Saturday just wouldn•t have been the same. Midway through the first half a Cincinnati fan was heard to exclaim, "This is ridiculous. Louisville's a one man team and this is a one man game.·· Now Louisville is far from being a one man team, of course. The center spotlight belonged to Howard last Saturday, but there have been other heroes on other days. Even Saturday, the spotlight has to include the offensive line. Without a hole Howard would have no plaiCe to skitter. ''Trick or TJreat'' by IRENE SPRADILING A R A-Slater has be,en officially boycotted. The two-d~y "Trick or Treat the SUB .. scheme started last Tuesday, when the Stud~~nt Senate s.et up a food station outside the Dean of Students Office in the Student Union Building, The "mini-cafeteria," open from 11 a.m. to I p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday, sold beef stew at 20 cents a serving, bologna and cheese or tuna sandwiches at 20 cents a piece, and soft drinks at 10 cents a 12-ounce can as an alternative for students, faculty, and staff who usually eat lunch in the SUB or cafeteria. During the boycott, p•eople in and around the SUB were ask:ed to sign a petition demanding from ARA-Slater, "better food, better service, and lower prices." As of p.m. Tuesday, boycott instigaters had collected 3·44 signatures. By this time, about 200 sandwiches, 9 gallons of beef stew and four cases of soft drinks had found therr way to the stomach of a countless mulltitudc. The multitud • was happy : for they had pent considerably less than usual on their noon day meal. · "10 cents for a bowl of hot beef stew," remarked one student, .. that's better than the SUB any day. And in the press box Saturday they were drooling over the holes opened by Brundula, Nickerson, Gitschier, Reese, and Simpson. But the real story was Howard Stevens, No. 1 on his jersey and No. 1 in the hearts of the fans. He was given about five standing ovations Saturday afternoon, one for each of the three touchdowns he scored and one for each of the two NCAA records he broke. As he trotted off the field he was engulfed by about 300 Louisville fans. They were there to slap him on the back, pat his head, touch him, and thank him. One man asked Howard to shake the hand of his three year old son. And then there were the kids. Seven year-olds, ren-year-olds, thirteen-year olds, forty or fifty of 'em. They are Howard's true fans. They love him. They followed him all the way to the dressing room, laughing and wide-eyed all the way. When he'd stop, they'd gather around to touch and stare. It was a first name relationship. It was, '"Way to go, Howard. You showed 'em, Howard.'' It was love. They circled around as Howard kisS(jt · his pretty wife and told her. "We did ' we did it." It made one little girl sad, that. khif She sighed and wistfully said, "Darn, ht already married.'' Howard Stevens. The new record is 6!; held by Howard Stevens of Louisville, }scored two more touchdowns in tl second half. On the way to gaining 258 yards on the day, Howard eclipsed another carer .. record.
