LOUISVILL I AL VOL. XLV, NO. 1 ROOM 117 OITER HALL AUGUST 31,1973 CHANGES! by Debbie Graves Returning to school to discover that things aren't what, even where, they used to be can be truly an unsettling experience. No one likes to run down the stairs clutching 8 cents to be stopped dead by a sign reading '1'elephone Office." Even more disconcerting is to be frustrated in a search for something or someone that no one seems to know or care about. Where can one turn when he discovers that the Southern Police tudents have vacated Stevenson Hall and left no forwarding address with the grad students now there? The answer to that question and other information on changes occurring on campus over the summer follows. The Klein Machine Company building at I 912 South Brook is no longer such; it will become the Union for Student Activities Building (U.S.A.) and replace the coffee house next to the Red Barn. The Red Barn will remain temporarily, but the coffee house will be razed for a student parking area. New student parking areas will be needed because of construction plans for the site north of the Life Sciences building - formerly the largest student parking area. A two-phase project has been planned for two large buildings to house classrooms, faculty offices, and study areas. One building, purely classrooms, and the other also holding fifty to sixty offices, should together contain 5,500 students. The first phase is planned to be · completed by December, 1973; the second by June, 1974. Security has changed its name and location: the Department of Public Safety is now to be found at 1930 South Brook, at the corner of Brook and Barbee. During September the Purchasing Department, Stockroom, and Building and Grounds will move to the Service Complex, along with Fleet Operations, because of its transfer from the Department of Public Safety to B&G. For those of you .unfamiliar with the Service Car Pool Planned For F acuity /Staff by Ria Bosco If all goes well , there may be a noticable change in the number of cars on campus this semester. Through the use of car pools, the Department of Public Safety hopes to alleviate the ever-present parking problems. Dan Keller, director of Public Safety , explained that lack of space is not the only reason behind the department's efforts. Currently, University drivers are operating in the most inefficient method possible. That is, each person drives his own car. He added that with the cost of gas, maintenance, and parking facilities, it may be to everyone's advantage to become part of a car pool. Since the plan is in the experimental stages it is only being conducted with the faculty and staff. Should it prove worthwhile it will be expanded to include students. ' The reasons for starting the experiment with faculty and staff only, according to Keller, are that they have more stable schedules, and it is less exper"~ve to work with a smaller group. On August 1 the faculty and staff began registering for parking permits. By the first of October the department will begin to put the information they have collected, that is names, addresses, and zip codes into a University computer. When the data is compiled, the registrants will be mailed a list of those persons in their zip code area. They in tum may wish to con tact these persons to form a car pool. Along with this information will be mailed a questionnaire to determine reactions and solicit suggestions. Keller said that at the present there are not many who are aware of this new service. However, the opinions he has received have been favorable. There may still be other altematives not yet explored. For example, if many persons commuting to the University live in localized areas, it may · be more economical to purchase buses for such groups instead of adding additional parking spaces. One thing is for sure - the parking situation will be shifting soon as a result of new construction, and less spaees will be available. The Department of Public Safety is looking ahead and exploring many areas to cope with the problem. Confusion reigns at the .. Registration Shuffle. Complex, it is located at Brook and Warnock across from Crawford Gym and currently houses the Payroll Dept. and Business Offices. Fine Arts printing and drawing, formerly of 1906 Avery Court has relocated at 1910 rear South Brook Street, with entry from the Miller Hall side. The front of the building is now the University Mail Room, which moved out of the UC building and was replaced with the telephone office. Student mail boxes will remain in the UC. Photo by Carl Maupin Art Therapy has moved from the Fine Arts Building to the third floor of the former Dental School at the comer of Brook and Broadway. Audiology i:ind Family planning are now in this building also. The Southern Police dormitory students can now be found at Fraternity Complex Building "B" in tcad of Stevenson Hall which now houses grad students.
