Alluisi of the University of Louisville is resigning to accept the position of "University Professor" at Old Dominion University at Norfolk, Va. He will assume the distinguished professorship January I, 1974. In accepting Alluisi's resignation U of L president Dr. James G. Miller said," As University president J can accept Dr. Alluisi's resignation only with sincere regret ; as a friend and colleague familiar with his national reputation i111 his field for many years. I am pleased that this opportunity serves to recognize his professional stature at such an early age." "No university can adequately replace a man of Earl Alluisi's calibre,'' Dr. Miller said. He added that "we wili have to rethink our objectives and set about accomplishing our goals using a new array of talents." Alluisi, 46, has served as vice president for planning and institutional research at U of L since July, 1971 He is . also professor of psychology at U of Land has been a member of the facult:y for 10 years. In 1970 Alluisi received the Jerome H. Ely Award of the Human Factors Society, and the following year was presented the Franklin V. Taylor Award of the Society of Engineering Psychologists for his research. He is currently president of the Society of Engineering Psychology and president-elect of the Division of Military Psychology of the American Psychological Association. At Old Dominion he will establish a new laboratory dealing with his research specialty of human factors as 1related to work environrnen ts. In addition to the designation as "University Professor," All u isi will serve as professor of psychology at the Virginia school. His duties will be limited to teaching, research and service with no administrative responsibilities. "One of the high points of my tenure at the University of Louisville was service on the Presidential Search Committee wttich was able to bring Dr. James G. Miller to the University," Alluisi said. "With Dr. Miller's understanding of planning, I can feel relaxed ~!lbout the future of the University's planning effort and free to get back to the things I prefer doing," he added. Among the planning activities which Alluisi initiated was a program of extremely accurate enrollment projections which predicted enrollments 10 per cent higher than official studies commissioned by the state. Two years· ago U of L estimated an enrqllment of 12,1 00 for the current term. Actual enrollment is 12,230. "Our enrollment predictions are now automated and revisions can continue to be made as current data are fed in," Alluisi said. Alluisi holds a B.A. degree from the College of William and Mary and received his Ph,.D. degree from The Ohio State University in 1954. Before coming to U of L he was a scientist for Lockheed-Georgia, the Stanford Research Institute and Lockheed Aircraft. He has also worked with the U.S. Army Medical Research Laboratory at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He has been active in a number of civic and cultural organizations, serving as president of the Kentucky Civil Liberties Union and the Kentucky Humanities Council. He belongs to 15 professional and scholarly organizations and has written some 150 publications and research reports. As planning and institutional research vice president Alluisi has had responsibility for over-all planning at U of L, development of physical plants including coordination of federal grants for institutional development, and organization and initial directions of seve r al major new projects of University-wide concern.
