Stephan Phelps, an A&S political science 111ajor, has won the special election for Student Government Association President held this week. Phelps defeated two other A&S students - Unda Miller and Mark Neff - for the position. The unofficial vote totals, compiled Wednesday night, are: Phelps ........................ 643 Miller ........................ .438 Neff. ................... ........ 253 In the race for Academic Vice-President, Connie· Cole defeated Rana Pennington, Steve Matheis and John Byers,)r. On Wednesday night, a recount in the race had been .ordered. But Thursday afternoon Bobbi Miller, who coordinated the election, said there had been an error in adding the total vote and a recount was no longer necessary. Cole had, before the error was discovered, been leading Pennington by only five votes. The unofficial vote totals in the Academic Vice-President race arc : Connie Cole ................... .488 Rana Pennington ............... .411 Steve Matheis ........ . .......... 207 John Byers,Jr. ............. . ..... 79 After the election, Phelps said he will "just implement the policies I stressed in my campaign." In his campaign, Phelps said he would 3;ttempt an investigation of the parking situation on Belknap Campus, try to bring a concert series with nationally known performers to U of L, support a women's studies program, strive for more student input in university policy decisions, and press for a full review of the services provided to University College students. Phelps said he feels UC students are not receiving the full amount of services that other U of L students receive. Linda Miller, who remains President of the Arts and Sciences student council, said her defeat was the result of "not · enough organization." "I guess," she added, "I just didn't know what I was doing." She also said the special election was different than the regular student government elections usually held in March. She said this difference hurt her planning for the campaign. The election was called to . fill the unexpired terms of former SGA President Greg Price, who resigned in August, and former . SGA Academic Vice-President Scott Yeakey, who resigned in June. Phelps and Cole will hold office until next March, when the regular SGA elections will be held. As Pre ident o; the SGA, Phelps will hold a scat on the university Board of Trustees. He will be responsible to the Student Senate, the main governing body of the SGA. Phelps and Cole will take office at the Student Senate meeting next Tuesday. ·-
