"It's not anything alarming, it's just kind of amazing," said Tim Dowling, University of Louisville Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy. "We've had Hurricane Ike, the winter storm and the windstorm last week," said Dowling. "This is pretty remarkable to have a major metropolitan area like Louisville get hit s E E I N s I D E by a storm that causes a major power outage, three times in a span of [a few] months." "It was naturally occurring climatological phenomenon that really impact the day to day events of our lives," said Keith Mountain, Chair and Associate Professor, of Department of Geography and Geosciences at U of L. "It finaJly impacts people and we forget how vulnerable we are." Mountain said factors such as population density, how goods and services are delivered to stores, and how power is delivered to the community is what causes people to be alarmed by the weather. "There are ways to identify what we call ranges or extremes of weather," said Mountain. "We would certainly look at the unusual windstorm, maybe the high ice event we recer,J.tly had. "Those were extreme events." "The basic cause of that is that the equator's hot and the poles are cold," said Dowling. "This is a time of year, were it starts to switch over from kind of a stable winter pattern to the unstable spring pattern. The heat starts to move from the equator to the pole at this time of the year. It's a little early actually this year; it's just the way it's coming out." WEATHER see page 2 Shuffling the Cards Kragthorpe seems ready to play the hand he has dealt himself. Brohm leaves O.C. position By Brandon Davis The Louisville Cardinal sports@louisvillecardinal.com Over the past few weeks, there have been a number of interesting developments come from the University of Louisville football program. Between the announcements of the Cards' 2009 recruiting class, and the departure of offensive coordinator Jeff Brehm, U of L football has been one of hotter topics as of late. Perhaps the most noteworthy announcement to come out of the U of L football office last week was the confirmation that Jeff Brehm, former U of L star quarterback and offensive coordinator would not return as the Cardinals signal caller next season. Kragthorpe will now assume the play calling responsibilities for the upcoming season. In a press conference last Monday, U ofL Head Football Coach Steve Kragthorpe told a group of reporters that he informed Brohm of his decision to take over the play calling duties and offered him an opportunity to stay on, but in a non-coaching position. "I want to be the guy that is scrutinized," Kragthorpe said. ''I'm fully comfortable in that role. I'm fully aware of what that entails, and so there will be no gray area in terms of that I will be the point guy." Brehm turned down Kragthorpe's offer and has since announced that he will reunite with his former mentor and head coach at U of L Howard Schnellenberger at Florida Atlantic University, as the team's new quarterbacks coach. After ranking among the top 10 in total offense for five straight seasons, the Cards finished 2008 ranked No. 43 at just over 376 yards of total offense a game. "I did the best job I could, given the circumstances the last couple of years," Brohm said. "I'm thankful for getting a chance to do the things Coach has allowed me to do."
