He will retire at the end of the season. Crum 'got the best of both worlds' in retirement By J.J. Hysell Sports Editor It is the end of an era for University of Louisville athletics. Denny Crum, head coach of the men's basketball team for the past 30 seasons, announced he is retiring from his post at the end of the season. .The most recognizable figure in U of L sport~ history, Crum leaves the helm with a long list of accomplishments and a bevy. of memories. "I wouldn't trade this experience for anything," Crum told a packed audience full of media representatives, university faculty and trustees in the Frazier-Martin room of the old Cardinal Stadium football complex. "I could've done a lot of things at a lot of other places, but that was not my wish." Reports leading up to Fri.day's announcement claimed that a rift existed between Crum and U of L Director of Athletics Tom Jurich, and that Crum was being forced out of the position. Crum, however, said the move to step down is "my decision." ''I'm going because 1 want to," he said.
