However, Sunday has come and gone, and no demolition work has begun on the project. In a statement released from the vice president of finance and administration, Larry Qwsley said: "The university has not moved forward with construction of a new residence hall, but we fully plan to open a pew facility, if not in fall 2002 then in fall 2003. We determined 'it would be best to look at the operation of Bettie Johnson Hall, to spend time talking to students and to incorporate w~at we learn from those efforts into planning for a new facility. And we are comfortable that we can still accomplish our goal of increasing the number of - residential students within a reasonable time frame." No information was released regarding the reasons for the change. "It is not unusual for the administration to keep quiet on these types of matters," said Angela Richie, SGA President. . "Normally, these matters are addressed at the regular meetings of the Board of Trustees. I'm sure there will be questions regarding this situation when we meet on the twenty-'third of this month. I'm sure that thy student body will be pleased by the delay." This view was certainly Photo by Quinn Mueller The Fourth Street Parking lot is not going to be used for dorm space this year. However, it may be gone in 2002 or 2003. -echoed by a number of students on campus. "The thing that strikes me most about Fourth Street is trust," said Allison Egnew, junior English · major. "We pay seventy- eight bucks a year tq park, they could at least be up-front and forthcoming about what their plans are," she said. "It's just as well though, I won't mind convenient parking for another couple semesters." "I think it's great that they're not starting construction this semester, I drive to campus, and I haven't talked to anyone else who isn't upset about losing fourth street," said Paul Stogner, senior finance major. "The students shouldn't have to go to the administration for answers, they should be working for us," he said. "I definitely was not looking forward to. all of those bus rides we would have had to. be making.;' The plan for the rest of the semester would have been as follows. On April 1, students would have arrived on campus and would have been directed to park in either the green Floyd Street garage or in the green lot at Papa John's stadium. Students parking at the stadium would then ride a shuttle bus running on twelve minute intervals to and from campus. The cost of parking at the Papa John's would remain seventy-eight dollars, the cost of a green pass. The proposed dormitory, when it is eventually completed, is intended to be similar to Bettie Johnson Hall. The company that currently manages Bettie Johnson, Allen and O'Hara, will also be the proprietors of the new dormitory, with the same revenue sharing- system . in place between Allen and O'Hara and the Uni~ versi ty. "The University intended Bettie Johnson to be a 'crown jewel' of the residence halls, therefore I expect the 'new building to be along those same lines," Richie said.
