A & S initiates plus/minus grading s~cale Students upset over adoption of new grading policy By Amanda Lee Anderson Staff Writer To the dismay of many students, the University of Louisville initiated a new policy that allows professors to utilize the plus-minus grading scale. Under the policy, students earn quality points not only according to the letter grade they receive, but according to pluses and minuses too. In the system, the student earning an A+ earns four quality points per credit hour; an A also earns four quality points per hour. But an A- earns 3.7 quality points; and a B+, 3.3. For every plus, except an A+, the student earns an extra 0.3 quality points, whereas for every minus, the student is penalized 0.3 quality points. Similar systems to this are used in many institutions in higher education, and the basis for this system-was the one used in U of L's graduate school. Associate Dean Julia Dietrich, a member of the Faculty Senate and the Committee on Curriculum, proposed this grading system in February 2002. The issue was conferred within the Curriculum Committee during the January 15 meeting. The issue was forwarded to the Faculty Senate without committee opinion. In the February 5 Faculty Senate , meeting, the issue was discussed, where the following motion was passed: "Effective Summer 2002, the College will adopt the plus-minus grading system (A+to F) in all undergraduate courses in which the A through F system is used and that the conversion of letter grades in calculation of the qualitypoint average follow the practice of the Graduate School [of the University of Louisville.]" This system has come under a great deal of debate recently. Dr. Jim Carter, the advisor for U of L's Faculty Senate, said that it would pose a problem for determining Dean's List and Dean's Scholar students. "The definition of a Dean's Scholar is anyone who makes all A's . What if one grade was an Aminus?" he asked .-"Would that make them simply a Dean's List Student, rather than a Dean's Scholar? This issue has not yet been addressed." In addition, Carter cites the fact that right now, the system is not mandatory, so some professors are choosing not to use it in calculating students' grades. As a result, two students could be enrolled in the same course, but diffe~ent sections with different professors. These two students could turn in com-parable work and receive comparable grades, but if one professor utilizes the weighted plus-minus system a.nd the other does not, one student will end up with a higher grade in the course. Donny Geralds, a junior biology major, said, "I had originally heard that the university had discussed implementing the plus-minus policy as a response to grade inflation. I feel that this is an inappropriate response; the professors should try to challenge students more in their courses rather than use a system like this to bring grades down." Brian Patterson, an undecided sophomore, agreed. "It seems unfair forpeople who try to get a 4.0, and it's not exactly easy to get straight A's when See PLUS/MINUS page 3
