In past years, students have bought rickets for themselves and guests at the annual Ticket Campout held in the spring, but with a cormoversial new proposal by the SGA, the purchase of a guest ticket will be eliminated. A committee of the SGA agreed that the change is needed due to expected higher ticket demand next year. U ofL will be entering the Big · East conference, and although the Big East does not regulate ticket sales, membership in a more prestigious conference and higher-ranked opponents are expected to increase ticker sales. SGA president Ryan McKinley is a member of the committee. He said that, with the growth of Cardinal athletics, the school must create a student section to rival that oflarger schools. He said eliminating guest tickets will help to accomplish that goal because it will allow more ticket purchases by U of L students. "It's a step in the direction of having a more organized student section." Keri Barnes, public relations officer for L-Raisers, U ofl:s student spirit club, strongly supports the proposal. "So many students were giving their tickets to non-students, and we wanted to show U of L pride instead of only one in four seats being students," she said. Other students have concerns with the proposal. "I think that it's ridiculous," said senior Melanie Miranda. "A lot of people who get guest passes give them to alumni." Miranda said this strengthens the alumni-student relationship. SGA senato~s Andy Goss and David Lasoski question the legitimacy of the decision and the process by which the ruling was made. The senators who opposed the proposal won the original senate vote held Nov. 9, but McKinley felt there was enough dissension among voters to create a committee to review the topic. "I have always complained about how our student section doesn't even come close to measuring up to other great basketball schools like Florida, Maryland and Duke," said committee member Shannon Jefferies.
