CARDINAL SPEED SCHOOL EDITION We Too Are Proud THAT ... . . . “The Cardinal is a newspaper, published by the students of the Uni-versity of Louisville. The views ex-pressed in it are those of students only.” Official Student Publication of the University of Louisville Z-147 Vol. 8 Louisville, Ky., Friday, April 12, 1940 No. 26 Speed Royalty To Open Engineers’ Day When the Engineering College holds its annual open house and exhibition for the University and the public Friday the engineers will have their own Queen reign-ing over the festivities. In keeping with the spirit of the school and of the day, the Queen will open the exhibits at 2 P. M., by throwing the power switch which will start the equipment and machinery. A crowd which should number 5,000 will flow through the various departments, being enlightened and mystified by the various displays and stunts. A complete souvenir program is being prepared for free dis-tribution to the visitors, and in-terested parties may view the smiling face of Queen Peggy in these pages. At some time in the early evening, Dean F. L. Wilkin-son will receive the Queen in front of the Speed Building. She will be presented with the key to Speed School, and escorted on a tour of the exhibits by a Com-mittee of Student Council mem-bers. Speed Sponsors All-Campus Convocation An all campus convocation with oomph—that’s what Speed School is sponsoring at the Playhouse, 11:30 Thursday morning. This e-normous, colossal affair, is the engineers own way of preview-ing the wares that they will “peddle” on Engineers’ Day. Each of the four Engineering depart-ments and the physics depart-ment will be allotted 10 minutes during which they will demon-strate why this year’s “open house” will be the best in the history of the school. The Chemicals plan a speak-easy scene in which they will do something on the order of turn-ing water into wine or versy visa. The Civils intend to map the place with one of their lightning-fast surveying crews. The E. E. boys, not to be outdone, will pull some stunt with about 15,000 of their precious volts. Mum’s the word with the Mechanicals as to what they have on the program. The Physics Department will be right in step with an interesting bit of magic. Dean Wilkinson of the Speed School, will climax the gathering with a brief pep talk for Engineers’ Day. A gigantic, in fact, a terrific crowd is wanted at the convoca-tion, to prepare the Speed boys for the gigantic and terrific crowd, to which they’ll play host Friday. -Caufield and Shook Message From Queen Peggy I want lo lhank the Speed Student Body on behalf of the Pi Beta Phi's for the splendid honor I have received. We have always thought a lot of our friends in Speed School, and we will continue to cooperate with you and support your activities. I had a wonderful time at your Engineers' Ball, and appreciated the lovely flowers I received from the Student Council. I'm wishing you a successful Engineers' Day, and I'm anticipating helping you in its celebra-tion. You are to be commended upon the new method of electing your queen and the significance you have added to an already great honor. PI PHI’S PEGGY HOBLITZELL CROWNED Close Race Decides Victor The Eighth Annual Engineers Ball clicked off Thursday night at the Madrid to the highly en-joyable rhythms of Jimmy James and his fifteen Jammers. Six hundred collegians alternately sweeted and swinged as James evolved his repertoire. Two vocalists supplemented the melody occasionally, and one of them (the blonde, you know !) supplemented many a Joe Col-lich’s interest in his date. In fact, this young miss is credited with temporarily suspending all break-ing at several of last winter’s debutante balls by adsorbing the stag line. The Speed School faculty turn-ed out in force to give its moral support and morals supervision. Among the dancers were noticed a number of Speed graduates, many of them accompanied by recently acquired wives. As the minutes slipped by, tension grew as the question of the result of the Queen election was in the collective mind. At midnight, Carey Evans, chairman of the Ball Committee, wished the crowd a pleasant even-ing and introduced Dean Ford L. Wilkinson. With a few explana-tory remarks, Dean Wilkinson told of the closeness of the race, the excellent spirit of the com-petition, and the obvious suit-ability of all the candidates. Then amid shrieks of thrilled Pi Phi’s the Dean called for Queen Peggy Hoblitzell. Peggy took her place on the throne as the crown of red and while car-nations was placed on her head. The entire group of Engineers and friends paid homage to the first real Engineers Queen. The seven Maids of Honor, each burdened with a large mixed bou-quet, grouped about the rose-bear-ing, dimpled Queen. Photqgraphers’ bulbs flashed, streamers spiralled into the air, and some impassioned soul shout-ed, “Long live the Queen !” Concrete Expert To Talk At Speed School Herbert M. Stoll, district structural engineer for the Port-land Cement Association, Indianapolis, will speak at a meeting of the student chapter, American Society of Civil Engi-neers, at the Speed Scientific School, University of Louisville, Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 p. m. Local engineers and architects will also be present. Mr. Stoll’s subject will be “The Effect of Construction Methods on Reinforced Concrete Design”. Arrangements for the talk are in charge of Prof. W. B. Wendt, off the Civil Engineering Department.
