Fieldhouse Cost Of "Sing" .The J unior Boa!rd of Trade has announced a new •project expressly. for t!he purpose of raising funds for the new Fieldhouse at U. of L. They ihave realized the seriousness of the need, and are taking advantage of 'an opportunity in order to substantially assist the school. 'Dhe Board has been .asked to select an entrant ·from Louisville f-or the Annual Miss America Contest at Atlantic City, and they are planning a dance to be held on fiiday, J une 14, at the Iroquois Gardens. At this time aU candidates will be judged, and the winner will be announ ced. All proceeds from the dance will go toward the establishing of .a fund fur the new bu ilding. Kiwanis, Rotary, and other luncheon clubs will name candidates, and the Board desires at least ten girls from the Univers ity. Anyone can nominate a candida ·te so long as they are able to back thek en try with at least twenty-five tickets. 'DhioS, it must be u nderstood, is not .a Universtty function , and has no backing as such. However , Mr. Leslie Shively, Alumni Secret ary, says that it is supported by several impor tant campus person-ages. Concerning ihe event, Mr. Shively s tated, "Here is a real opportunity for U. of L. students to help get the ball rolling for the new f ieldhouse, and .at the same time help one 10f its students receive a much coveted !honor. (Conti nued on page 2 ) All entries for the Fry berger Sing must have been listed in the ACC office prior to May 15, 1946. .Each entry must be accompanied by a $5.00 check made .pky.able to the All-Campus Council, Univet~ Sity :of Louisville. This fee is ·to 1ass.ure en try and will be returned 1fue n ight of ihe Sing to ·those groups participating. The cost of lihe Sing is to be horne by the University and .by the ACC: President J aoobsen has pledged th·e University for $50.00 fur ·this use and the ACC has voted to pay the remainder of the cost up .to $100.00. There will be no cha:r,ge for .any 1gr:oup to participate. All entries will be subject to tJhe Flyers Meet Monday following !rUles as .adopted by the ACC, .witJh but one exception: The U. of L. The purblioation. will include a foreword by President Jacobsen and a review of the outstanding events in the three year history of ,the class '<>f 1946. He says .that ithis type of publication has been successful in other colleges where it lh.as been tried. The president believes 'that more interest is generated wlhen a small staff works iO'Jl. a publication portraying the record of t heir own graduating class. The class of '1946 boasts an enrollment of 116 members, who have been extremely active. The long lis.t of activ1ties speaks very IWelli:.or the size oi the class. Th e frontispage fur each college O'f 1lhe universilty will .be an a~tract study of the .tools used by that college. Final announcements concernhug the Navy Farewell Bootride were received this week from Jim Thomas, dhairman of the project. The .festivities will begin a.t 12:30 next Tuesday w:i.th the dismissal of all classes jn the entire University. This allows an hour to get from oohool to the Four.tJh Street Dock in time to board the "Island Queen" by 1:30, sailing time. Mr. 'Dhomas requests that any one who is planning' to take .an automobile fill it w1th students, so that all will have means of transportation. L. A.'s Problems To Be Studied The Univerntty of Louisville is one of nineteen oolleges and universities in the Midwest which are chairter ·members of a.n interuniversity organiZiation LoiT the •Study of common problems of general education in the ~J.~iberal arts. 'Dhis organization 1will attempt rto solve many problems by cu tti:ng across subject lines. The new group will hold conferences for the faculties frrom the member colleges in each department as well .as for coHege executives to • study course :requirements. According to Dean Oppenheimer, the inclusion of U. of L. in this .grou,p is in recogrution of the .good work performed by the students 10.nd faculty. (Continued on page 2) Two .Of Faculty Are Promoted On Wednesday, May 15, Dean J. J. Oppenheimer announced two promotions fo;r University of Louisville faculty members. Dr. C. C. Vernon who was formerly an Associate Professor 1and Acting Head of the Department of Ohemistry, has been made a full Professor and Head of t'he Department of Chemistry. Dr. Justus Bier, formerly Associate Profess'Or and Acting Head of the Department of Fine Arts, is now a full Profess·or and Head of the Department of Fine Arts. Witten and Wilson To Represent U-L CarroH Witten and Tom Wilson .are representing the University of Louisville on rtJh.e National Food Conservation Committee. All of ithe important or.ganiza'tions in Louisville :are ~represented on the Louisville committee. Two of the more important org anizations represented on the committee :are ihe Council of Churches and the League of Women Vot ers. The entertainment p1ans have heen completed; and tare scheduled to include an exclusive preview of the Army-Navy Show which will be released the first part of June. Don Brown and his orchestra have been engaged to play for the afternoon. Tickets may be secured at any Dean's office, .absolutely free, •and the committee in oharge an, ticipates a capacity ttendance. This invitation includes Medical School, Dental School, Speed School, all schools of the University of Louisville, and all Trustees, Faculty members, Board members, and Office employees. Concerning this latter statement, Mr. Thomas says, "We want to eg.pecially urge the faculty and their families to attend. The party cannot be a complete success without them." Lyle Speaks At Dent. School During a short Friday afternoon assembly of ihe dental .school last week, Rear Admiral A. G. Lyle, (DC) USN, speaking for the United States Navy, informed the members of the school the present offers ,of the Navy Department to lh.ealthy capable ·~aduates of dentistry. Admiral Lyle partially exp lained ·the attitudes ·of the Corps and urged t•hat the dental profet sion as a whole continue with .a superior feeling toward its organization and fraternity. Admiral Lyle was introduced to the student body by Dr. Myers, the Dean of the Dental College, who spoke ,of the achievements of the Admir·al. He is 1ilie only living dentist to attain ·the rank of an Admiral and is ,the only living dental officer to wear the Congressional Medal of Honor.
