The square dance, with Miss Meta Schweibert a noted authori ;y on square dancing, as caller, will be provided with a suitable .urches~Ta complete with a fiddler. Blue jeans are required dress for boy : cotton dresses or pinafores, for girls. Popular Music To Be Played After each set of square dances, music will be provided for regular social dancing for those who have no "mountain rhythm .. , Another added attraction will be a floor show with a sextet composed of .girls on ~he campus as Oile of the hlghlights. Stag or Drag Sponsored by the Women s Ath ·c Association, it is not to be a formal "date dance." Everyone, .couple or stag. is invited. A similar dance held last year wa uch a success and described (Continued on page 2) Little Theater To Stage 'Laura' January 13-16 "Laura," the stage .play from the best seller of the same name, is in rehearsal by the Little Theater Company at ~he P layhouse fur presentation January 13, 14, 15 and 16. Homer Burton Blackwell, the WAVE announcer is honored with the male lead .of Waldo Lydecker. Mrs. F rank R. Denman, a newcomer to the Little Theater has the W:le role of Laura. Robert Wendall, Paul Pearson, Norman B. Krausgill, Harold Harned, Anna May Byne and Mrs. John Hamilton are others who have important roles in the play. Mr. Rolo Wayne and his stage crew are setting Mondays, Wednesdays and F ridays for working on the sets. Rehearsals are also held on these same nigh :s. Escaping Gas Causes Fire In Basement Of Card Inn By LES GADDIE Two fire engine companies and a hook and ladder company were called out early Monday morning, December 9, to ex~:i nguish a fire that broke out in the basement of the CardinaJ Inn University of Louisvil)e student hangout at F irs.t and Shipp Streets. The fire origina:ed in a basement storeroom adjoining a room being used as a meeting place by Si,gma Chi Sigma fraternity. The probable cause <Jf the fire was a faulty furnace and a gas leak in t·he unventilated basement. Smoke and gas hampered the fire fighters to such an extent that four firemen including Captain John Dreher of Hook and Ladder Truck 3, were overcome. Two, Mr. Students fled the Cardinal Inn in such haste after the fire was discovered that it was noiiced later that two balls remained unplayed in one of the pinball machines. One of the balls had been cocked into the channel. but the player of the machine had left before shooting it. John FeLkner, 4500 block First S reet, and Mr. Carl Bowman of 1328 South Pres on, were taken to the hospital. Mr. Bowman was given artificial respiration after (Continued on page 3) T-8 Xmas Seals To Be On Sale In Center Tuberculosis Christmas s e a 1 s are on sale from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily in booths located in the Studen!J Center and the Administration Building. The sale is being sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, who sponsored the sale last year. Alpha Phi Omega has also announced that the Louisville chapter will he represented by a delegation of nine members a~ the national convention to be held in Kansas City, December 28 and 29. Fire Escape Is Key Listening Rooms In Music Annex Construction of listening rooms on the fourth floor of the music annex was authorized by the B ~ ard of Trustees at a meeting held Wednesday, December 4. Acting Presiden~ F. W. S amm has announc d that a date for the beginning of construction has not been set due to scarcity of materials and a holdup in the construc'. ion of the building's fire escape. The new fire escape has been constructed as far as the third floor but the American Elevator Company who holds the contract for the work will not be able to comple~e the job until steel production, held up because of the recent c<Jal strike, has been resumed. Soundproof Rooms The construction of soundproof listening rooms, similaT to those being used by record stores, was suggested in a letter ~·o the editor of the Cardinal by a group of music sch<)Ql students who complained that the two listening rooms now available were inadequate. Football Banquet Xmas Song Fest To Be Held December 20 A White Christmas Song Festival 'has been scheduled for 7:00 p.m. 'December 20 by the University Religious Council. A huge Christmas tree, that is ~·o be set up in fr.ont of the Administration Building, will he the center of activities. All University of Louisville student ·s are invited to attend, with guests, the carol festival, which will be led by the Baptist Theological Seminary Choi under the direction of Dr. Allman. The new memb rs are: Robert E. Bierbaum Carroll E. Brown, Wilbur L. Hayne, Gerard Helder, Edward E. Mason, Edwin Stauss, and John E. Steinert. These men were selected on the basis of scholarship, sociability, and pr acticality. The formal initiation was held in the Facul:.y Center Monday evening, December 9, followed by a banquet at the French Village. The chapter adviser, Professor Wilson R. Barnes, welcomed the new members with a short talk after the banquet. By TOM SHIVELY Rising to a stirring round of applause, Vince Lococo and Joe Trabue ok bows in true champion fashion last Tu sday night at the Football Appreciation Banquet, and most valuable player of 1946-47, respectively. Coaches F rank Camp and Dave Lawrence were voted honorary members of the University of Louisville 'L' Club. On hand at the fete were numerous dignitaries of Louisville, including Mayor E. Leland Taylor, Blakely Helm, E. S. Jouett, head of U. of L .'s Board of Trustees, several members of :·he board, Mr. Shelby President of the Junor Board of Trade, Acting President Stamm, the Deans of five U. of L. branches of educa tion, the football team, the ccmplete U. of L. coaching staff, sports wr i ~ers Frank Hartley, Larry B ck, Tommy Fitzgerald and Kent Tay lor and portscasters Harry McTigue of WINN and Don Hill of W A E. Pravdiuk Visits U-L On Thursday nigh~, December 5, at 8:00 p.m. approximately two hundred Louisvillians heard Commander Vasil Pravdiuk, representative of the Russian Navy, speak in the Allen Court Room of the Law Building on Belknap Campus. Commander P r a v d i u k was brought to Louisville by the International Cen~oer to deliver the address, "Art and Education in the Soviet Union." The purpose of his talk was to acquaint the people of Louisville with the educatio and culture of Russia, and ~rou gh his survey of the principles of Soviet education, art and music, he delivered his point, better understanding of his nation, to the audience. Since 1944, Commander Pravdiuk has been with the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D. C.
