Editors Resign College Newspaper Segregation Topic Of Big Controv~~rsy By ALAN GOLD The editor and managing editor of the University of Georgia undergraduate newspaper resigned last week after an uproar raised over an editorial attacking segregation. According to the Louisville Times. the university refutSed to permit editor Walter A. Lundy, Jr., of Cairo, Ga., and managing editor Bill Shipp, Marietta, to answer criticism levied by Hoy V. Harris, a member of the State. Board of Regents, in his own newspaper. The students' resignations were submitted on 'Wednesday, December 2. The editorial, which appeared in University of Georgia's ::rtudent paper, Red and Black. said, "With Communism knocking at the Negro's back door, we cannot afford to let educational segregation bar-riers stand. It is as plain as the red flag in Russia that continued segregation and suppression can and will cause the death of democracy by the hands of its own leaders." "At a recent meeting of the board of regents," Harris wrote in his paper, The Augusta Courier. "I brought the editorial to the attention of the regents and found that there were two young students present covering the meeting for the Red and Black. • • • • Some of the Regents asked them if they didn't know that (the editorial) would mean the mingling of the races and if that was what they wanted. Some of them went so far as to ask them where they came from and if their own people wouldn't be ashamed of them. "I tried to explain to these young gentlemen. . . . that the people of Georgia would not be willing to support a university which advocated mixing and mingling of the races in the public schools of this sta·te. I tried to explain to them that in their juven-ile damn foolery they were hurting the university and the cause of education in this state. I frankly told them that the money for the operations of the Red and Black would be discontinued unless they could do a better job .... "So these little squirts went back to Athens and got out another issue in which they made a personal attack on me . . . . They said Harris 'is attempting to squelch our fundamental right of freedom oJ the press.' Now there is no question of freedom of the press involved. The question ..... is whether or not the board of regents will be dictated to by a little handful of sissy, misguided squirts who have just enough knowledge to think they know it all. "Everytime I see one of these little sissy boys hanging around some college, the more I think every one of them ought to be made to play football. What we ned today is more he-men and fewer sissies."
