Oct. 7, 1954 Colonel Lewis L'Raisers Announce Fills Office • As B&G Head Homecoming Plans Col. Kelly H. Lewis, former commanding officer of the arsenal :at Charlestown, resigned from the army this summer to accept the position of superintendent of buildings and grounds at U of L. Lewis is a veteran of 39 years of military service. During World War II he worked toward the establishment of the Indiana Arsenal. After the war he went to Japan as procurement officer on General MacArthur's Far ·East Command and later was assigned to the Army General Staff in Washington. Col. Lewis returned to the Arsenal at the beginning of the Korean conflict and remained there until this summer. University Chorus Looks To Active Concert Year A native of Virginia, Lewis plans to make Louisville his permanent home. By OTTO REYNOLDS. JR. Under the guidance of new director Mr. Ed Barret, the University chorus is looking forward this year to a most active and ambitious season with performances both on and off the U of L campus. Award Trophies Two trophies will be awarded this school year to the fraternity and sorority which give the chorus the most support in U of L activities. The awarding of the trophies will be on the basis of the highest percentage of members enrolled in the chorus and the number of times members are present at rehearsals and performances. The awards w·ill be presented ·at the Fryberger Sing. The purpose of the chorus, as Students To Direct Mr. Barret, a native of Louisville, former music director at WHAS and WHAS-TV, and Director of the Philharmonic Chorus, is introducing a new system. He will use as assistants the directors of the organizations which participated in the Fryberger Sing last year. These assistants will conduct the chorus in various rehearsals and concerts. So far, around 100 students have enrolled in the two sections of the chorus. One section meets on Monday and Wednesday at noon, and the other meets from 3 until 5 on Wednesdays. Both sections meet in the Playhouse. Dr. John W. Taylor, former president of the University of Louisville. has been named executive director of WTTW. a new educational television station in ChicagQ. Dr. Taylor was president of U. of L. from 1947 to 1950. when he resigned to become deputy director- general of the United Nations Educational. Scientific and Cultural Organization. Kappa Delta Sorority Will Present A ward To Most Outstanding Campus Fraternity This spring, Kappa Delta Sorority will present a rotating trophy, to be awarded annually to the Most Outstanding Fraternity on campus. The compe.tition is open to all social fraternities on the campus, the winn·er to be determined by a point system. A fraternity or an individual will receive points for campus activities. The sorority feels that this award will create a greater interest in campus activities. For University publications such as The Cardinal. Thoroughbred. Views, Static. Segue. Masthead, Speed Way and The Speed Engineer. 10 points will be given for a member of the editorial staff and five for a reporter. Ten points will be given for members on all varsity athletic teams. Festivities will get under way at seven o'clock Friday evening with the judging of house decorations. Campus organizations will present their floats in the Homecoming parade at ten o'clock Saturday morning. The Fighting Cardinals will furnish the music for the dance. meet the Morehead Eagles at two o'clock .Saturday afternoon in the Homecoming game. The University Band will present the halftime show in which the Queen and her court will be introduced. Dance At Armory The Homecom\Jlg D.ance will be held in the Armory from nine until one Saturday night. During the evening, the Queen will be crowned and house decoration and float trophies will be presented to the winning organizations. Logan Collins' Orchestra will Student Union AndSUBPosts To Be Filled Leadership and Student Union Building Commissions will be elected at thee October 14 meeting of the University Student Council. Students desiring a commission post must submit a letter of application to the Dean of Men's office prior to noon of the election day. At the October 14 meeting the new tax revision law will be discussed. The b i 11, recently passed by Congress, states that college students wi.th income of $600 or more may be claimed as dependents. This law may be advantageous to any student who is helping to finance his education. As the bill contains many technicalities, the USC urges all s·tudents who may qualify for deductions to attend the meeting. The USC office will be open from twelve to one o'clock on Thursday and Friday of each week. The office is located in the north end of the Snack Bar. Applications for float and house decoration themes will be accepted in the Dean of Men's Office beginning Monday, October 11. There will be a $10 registration fee covering house and float entries. Each organization participating in the parade will be allowed to have six decorated cars accompanying their float. After the parade, floats will be displayed in the Quadrangle in front of the Administration Building. Judging For Queen The first judging of Homecoming Queen candidates will be held on October 25. At this judging a five-man committee will select a Queen. The remaining four will comprise the Queens Cow·t. Candidates' names and the organization which each represents must be submitted to the Dean of Men's Office by Thursday, October 21. The L' Raisers Commission urges every campus organization to sponsor a candidate for Homecoming Queen. The Commission speculates that this year will see one of the most successful Homecomings ever held at the University of Louisville. Notice! All studel11f.s who drive cars that are not registered in J efferson County must have a s-ticker on the car showing tha·t the personal property tax has been paid.
