Sigma K, Phi Tau, Lambda Chi Win Top House and Float Prizes Wetherby Honored As Alum Of Year By OTTO REYNOLDS The period of excitement and toil, the atmosphere of worry, tension, and hope, and the time of sleepless nights are over until Homecoming again rolls around in 1955. But the pleasant memories of the shut-out victory over Morehead, of the crowded Homecoming dance, of the exciting Homecoming parade, and of the winners of the house and float decorations will linger on. Judges The judges of house decorations, Miss Mary Spencer Nay of the Art Center, Mr. Sidney Appel of Appel's Clothing Store, and Mr. William Watts, Director of the Louisville and Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Commission, awarded Lambda Chi Alpha first place, Phi Kappa Tau second place, and Kappa Alpha third place in the fraternity class and Sigma Kappa first place, and Chi Omega and Pi Beta Phi both second place honors in the sorority division. We Go Pogo! Lambda Chi won with the slogan, "We'll Swamp 'Em." The decoration was really a comic strip which had come to life. With a background of swamp trees covered with Spanish moss, the comic-strip figures of Pogo, Deacon, Owl, Turtle, and Albert were created with such captions as "By jing, we have caught the Moreheadopol" (the Morehead eagle), "I is heavy witn grief for the pitifool thing," "The Cardinalocers got me" (the Morehead eagle is crying for help), and "I has 'splailled it twict' to him that we is invincibobble." Complete to the m o v i n g wings of the Morehead eagle, this decoration had realistic sound effects and very good lighting. Plucked Eagles Phi Tau's decoration was built around a plucking machine with feathered eagles moving into the machine and plucked ones coming out the opposite side. With two Cardinals in control of the machine, there were lights flashing off and on and terrific sound effects. In fact, the sound reminded one of a Poe torture chamber. With a slogan, "The Eagles will squeak in the Cardinal's beak," Kappa Alpha's idea was beautifully exhibited. A huge red and black Cardinal crushed eagles in his mouth. Sound effects were fitted to the crushing movements of the bird's mouth. First Place Under the caption, "They'll be Dopey, Grumpy, and Sleepy when we dwarf them," Sigma Kappa used music, good lighting, and well-painted decorations to cap- . ture first place in the sorority division. With some of the famous "Seven Dwarfs" walking in and out of a small cottage, the exhibition was complete to the smoke (Continued on page 6) GOVERNOR LAWRENCE W.
