I;OUISVILLE 8, KENTUCKY May 5, 1960 Convention Cancels A & S-> Business Classes Monday We Can Mock Our Ridiculers The time is drawing near for a percentage of the students of this University to change the a'tltitudes of both the citizens of. Louisville and ridiculing membets of the student hody., The time has arisen for us to mock, by actions, those who have mocked us by words. I think that it would be justifiable at this time to congratulate the students who have done such a wonderful job of keeping the whole idea alive. Let us remember th'a't the student body here at the University of Louisville has put together in the last month what other Universities in this country have put together in one year. Although we are on a down liill slope, the members of the steering Commi'ttee would like to urge you to keep up the spirit and we hope the final decision will be a credit to the University and the S t~ate of Kentucky. / Thank you for your cooperation. Eva would like all people who are interested in staff positions to apply, regard·tess of previous experience. Bob DeVoe, the new business manager of the Thoroughbred, is a pre-senior at Speed Scientific School. (Continued em page 5) USS Petitions l)ue Tonight at Meeting Tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Senate Rloom of the University Center is the deadline for submitting petitions to run for positions as voting memfbers of next year's Senate. IntereSit d students should bring their signed petitions to this meeting. The election of new members for the' Senate will be held next Thursday, May 12, with polls tentatively scheduled to 1be set up in each school of the University. The Arts and Sciences poll is tentatively scheduled to be set up in ground floor of the University Center building. Fryberger Sing Set Next Wednesday The annual Fr)llberger Sing will be held 'this coming Wednesday night, May 11, at 7:30p.m. in front of the Administration Building. In case of rain it will be held the same night in •Bigelow Hall, the reason for this is that the judges have other committments for the following night or the following Wednesday. The judges will !be Mildred Gaddie ,'a music teacher at Shawnee; Virgil Smith, a music teacher at Male; and ''Tiny, Thomale, the Louisville radio and television personality. The Awards to be given the same night are as follows: Kappa Delta's, Outstanding Fraternity; Phi Kappa Tau's Outstanding So. rority; Alpha Phi Omega Blood Drive Award; Arts and Sciences Oustanding Sophomore, J u n i o r and Senior A w a r d s ; Mortar Board's Outstanding Freshman Woman; Phi Eta Sigma's Outstanding Freshman Man. Guest Tickets Here In The Book Store Guest tickets for the Convention can be obtained from the University Bookstore, although the supply is limited due to a shortage of space: People will be seated on a first come-first serve basis. Membe~rs Called To Fin~al Round by Bob Ko!J.n Wi'th the words "Will the University of 'Louisville Mock Democratic Na'tional Convention please come to ordE~r!", an unique experiment in the 163 year history of the school will begin. With more than some 700 of the University's student body involved, this has been acclaimed by m'any to be the biggest extravaganza to hit the University since Dave Garroway and his ''Today" program came to Belknap Com-· pus in the d:iall of 1956. Every college of the University is involved, wfth the exception of Medical and Dental Schools. Today, at 12 noon, in the Hideaway of the UC, the final meeting of the state delegation chairmen will lbe held. At this meeting, credentials, and other information regarding the convention will be given out. It is imperative that all state chairmen attend this meeting. Tomorrow, May 6, at 12 p.m. in Bigelow Hall of the Student Union Building, a mee'ting of all delegates will take place, it is imperative that delegates attend this meeting as important inrformation regarding the ,convention will be given out. In an exclusive release to The Cardinal, President Philip Davidson and Exe!Cutive Vice-President Woodrow Strickler made the following joint announcement: 1. All Arts and Sciences classes for Monday, May 9, have been called off so that all students may attend the Mock Conven- . tion. 2. All Business :School c 1 a s s e s have likewise been cancelled. 3. All Speed School students will be officially dismissed to attend the Convention. Instructors who wish to take full classes to the Convention may do so if they wish. Dean Ernst is encouraging attendance at the convention. 4. Law School will use the procedure adopted by Speed School. Dean Volz also urges Law School students to take an active part in the Convention. Law School is out at 12 p.m. and is asked to report immediately .to Convention Hall, if they do not attend earlier. Reported President Davidson, "The Deans of the different colleges have eonsented to the dismissal of classes in their colleges, with the agreement that all students involved will attend the Mock Convention. We, of the University, feel this Convention will be a good lesson in practical politics that college students would otherwise not ibe ·able to receive. We trust that all University students will be at the Convention, and take an .active part in it." The steerilrl.g committee of the Convention has worked exeremely hard to get this holidAy for the student body.
