Sign at the top of the building: John P. Morton & Company, with 426 on either side. Sign above entrance: John P. Morton & Co. Stationers-Printers-Office Outfitters. Sign above door: Morton & Griswold. The company president was H. C. Griswold. John P. Morton & Company sold wholesale and retail stationery. As Morton & Griswold, the company published a series of school books. Advertisement on back of photograph: Morton & Griswold, Booksellers, Stationers, Printers and Blank Book Manufacturers, No. 459 Main, between Third and Fourth. New School Books Comprehensive Series. Published by Morton & Griswold. This series will comprise a thorough course of learning, from the elements to the highest principles. For this purpose, the Publishers have secured the aid of a greater amount of talent and experience, than has heretofore been comprised in a similar undertaking. The following form part of the Series--The New Primer, Common School Primer, Goodrich's Readers 1st, 2d, 3d, and Fourth. Mr. Goodrich is well known as the author of some of the very best School Books in existence, such as Parley's Geography, Parleys Tales and Histories, &c. These readers will be found to excel in intellectual merit, while in mechanical execution and cheapness they are unrivalled. Also, the Elementary Speller, Butler's English Grammar, Harney's Algebra, Key to Harney's Algebra, Dupuy's Hymns, revised, enlarged, and price reduced.
