| Description | COL. A. MACKENZIE, a side-wheel snag-boat (160 ft. x 33 ft. x 5 ft.), was built at Howard in 1900. Owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, she initially operated on the upper Mississippi River. When Captain David Tipton died at her wheel in Lake Pipen in 1904, the COL. A. MACKENZIE was renamed in his honor. After being sold at auction in 1920, DAVID TIPTON ran the Memphis-White River trade until 1923 when she was sold again and converted into an excursion boat named CITY OF CAIRO (Way #1058), which sank around 1924. |
