Way Number | 4841 |
Creator | Howard, James E., 1875-1956 (photographer) |
Description | ROSE HITE, a sternwheel packet with wood hull (155 ft. x 28 ft. x 4 ft.), was built in 1895 at Howard Ship Yard and Dock Company in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Owned by Louisville & Evansville Packet Co., ROSE HITE operated on the Ohio River between Evansville and Louisville until she was sold and moved to Pittsburgh in 1900. She collided with a towboat and sank in the Monongahela River on December 14, 1905, but was back in service in 1906. ROSE HITE was unfortunately in the U.S. Marshall's hands ten times in three years for nonpayment of debt until Captain J.S. Tyler of Nashville bought and renamed her Gracey Childers (Way # 2411) in 1908. She was lost in a fire at Paducah, Kentucky in 1909. |
