| Description | AMERICA (Way #240), a sternwheel packet with wood hull (200 ft. x 38 ft. x 6.5 ft.), was built in 1898 at Howard Ship Yard and Dock Company in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Owned by Capt. LaVerrier Cooley, AMERICA operated on the Ouachita River from Monroe, Louisiana to New Orleans in her early days. Around 1904, she moved to the Mississippi River and began running between Vicksburg and New Orleans. AMERICA was temporarily renamed Winfield Scott in 1924 for the movie "Magnolia." She foundered and sank at New Orleans on August 13, 1926. |
