JIMMIE WINKFIELD KY'S. CRACK RIDER WINS $200,000 PURSE AT ST. CLOUD Jockey Jimmy Winkfield, the crack American colored rider, who has been riding for Leon Mautacheff, millionaire Russian nobleman, in France for several years won the Republic stakes of 200,000 francs on Rahadur last Saturday at St. Cloud, and again proved the claim of many that this jockey is the premier rider of this day. Winkfield's horse paid his backers 14 to 1. King Alfonso of Spain won third place in this closing classic with his 4 year old Ruban, ridden by Lucien Lyne, also an American jockey. It was last August that Winkfield caused a stir at Deauville after riding this same horse, Rahadur to victory in the Grand Prix of Deauville of 100,000 francs. Winfineld and a friend were having supper not far from the King of Spain when certain Americans objected to the presence of the colored man. Thereupon the maitre d'hotel, with infinite tact, told the Americans that Winkfield was the prince of Kapurthala, son of the Punjab Maharapja of that ilk. Promptly, those who had wished the colored visitors be given the gate, expressed an earnest desire to be pre- was "put wise", and, gracious but grinning, held a minor court for the rest of the morning. Winkfield was born in Lexington, Ky., about 40 years ago, and in his early years was regarded as one of the greatest riders in the saddle. His many successful mounts included the winning of the Kentucky Derby in two successive years. He won on His Eminence in 1901, and repeated the following year on Alan-A-Dale. Winkfield has kept up his sterling riding ability since going abroad and connecting himself with the great stable of the rich Russian, and in France, they say, "If you want to win, play Winkfield's mount."
