PASTOR MAKES ANOTHER PLEA FOR UNITY OF MINISTRY Urges The United Support Of Simmons University; Unity Against Vice And Crime, In Saving Of Souls And In Business Rev. I. Garland Penn, Jr., the young pastor of the Jackson St., M. E. Church has been a persistent advocate a getting together, a better understanding between the ministers of the different denominations of Louisville. He has urged unity on issues which are vital to the life of the race. The article carried here, from his pen, came last week by special delivery, but too late for that issue. It is the third that the romer president of the Inter-denominational Ministerial alliance has written on the subject, and follows: When the President of the Inter-denominational Alliance appeared in person at the West Chestnut St. Baptist Church on Monday morning following publication of my last article, and made an appeal for the two ministerial Alliances to unite on the program outlined or o ne similar, what happened???? We have always believed t hat SIMMONS UNIVERSITY should have the united support of all the colored people of the city. Some have made personal donations to worthy students and in the present campaign for $250,000, we hope to be able to help push forward for "Greater Simmons". But my good Baptist brethren, if we can get together on ONE issue, we can get together on OTHERS. If at this time we had, as colored ministers of Louisville, a united body meeting at least once a month understanding - [Photo] REV I. GARLAND PENN, JR. Pastor Jackson St., M. E. Church - each other, it would be easy on the part of our people to put over this or any other campaign for race uplift. Under the present plan, one Alliance pulling one way and the other another way, will forever hinder the race in Louisville in making progress. What about a united ministry in a campaign against vice and crime? What papers are carrying the big headlines "$250,000 for Simmons University?" Why not support the Negro press? I have a case before me now of an aged Negro woman who had been in a white Insurance Company for twenty-three years, she became ill, fell behind two weeks, (total 50 cents) and this company canceled her policy for nonpayment. This is just one of the many cases happening each day in Louisville. What about a united ministry back of Negro insurance companies? It is said Louisville has 27,000 colored voters. How many of these deposit their earnings in Negro banks? Why can't we get together on the above named program, will the Baptist ministers answer? Why can't we get together in a campaign for "saving of souls" as well as for the training of mind and heart? The proposition is just this, if the white ministers of Louisville can come together once a month and study together, issues that effect their race, the Negro minister can do the same. A joint meeting we advocate once a month of all colored ministers in Louisville and vicinity. Now is the time--Let's get together We welcome an answer. RELIABLE COLORED LEAGUE DR.
