MRS. SARA MARTIN WITHERS AND HAYES B. NEWLYWEDS, SPEND HOLIDAYS HERE - ARTIST TELLS INTERESTING STORY OF WORK Among the many people who are spending the holidays in Louisville, former residents and visitors, none is more widely known, none has through ceaseless efforts and strenuous living, step by step climbed the ladder of a real success in any particular line of endeavor than has Mrs. Sarah Martin Withers, known throughout America as Sarah Martin, noted and popular Okeh record singing star, Louisville's own. Mrs. Withers recently became the bride of Mr. Hayes B. Withers of Detroit, Mich., a successful business man, also a former Louisvillian. The Detroit People's News, of December 3rd, a weekly rate paper had the following to say of the wedding in part: "The chimes of Detroit wedding bells were heard in Louisville, Kentucky, and the response was the arrival in Detroit on Thanksgiving morning of Miss Sarah Martin, Louisville, Ky., who for four years has made records for the O. K. Company. Miss Martin was married Thanksgiving evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stone, 2945 Macomb St., to Mr. Hayes B. Withers, 6140 Scotten, formerly of Louisville. The couple were childhood sweethearts. The bride wore white crepe de chine, trimmed in pearls and beads. Mrs. Cassila Withers Jones, sister of the groom, was matron of honor, while Mr. L. M. Shackelford was best man. Rev. English of the Christian Church officiated. After the wedding covers were laid for 30. Mr. and Mrs. Withers will be at home to their friends at 6140 Scotten Ave. She will continue to make records." Mr. and Mrs. Withers were recipients of many beautifu l presents, telegrams and [letters?] of congratulation. Born and educated in Louisville, Mrs. Withers is known by her many friends as one who gets the greatest joy out of helping others. Her school mates speak of her as having been the life of every party and a girl who was always ready to make someone else happy, yet in years that followed her own life for many years, after the loss of her mother, brother and other close relatives was one of sorrow and discouragement, yet with a spark of ambition and courage left waded thru her many trials and early misfortunes to the place she now fills, and is the kind of quiet, pleasant and refined artist one likes to meet. In her progress up the hill of prosperity Mrs. Withers has always tried to avoid narrowness and selfishness, keeping up the old spirit of helping others.
