Herbert Hoover elected by huge majority
Herbert Hoover was elected President and Charles S. Curtis Vice President last Tuesday by an unprecedented majority and as The Leader goes to press Kentucky Negroes are still rejoicing over the overwhelming victory of the Republican party all over the country. They rejoice over the election of Hoover and Curtis President and Vice President by such a record breaking electoral vote and that Kentucky gave the candidates close to 200,000 majority, the biggest in the history of Kentucky politics. They rejoice that in that majority five candidates for Congress were elected from districts normally Democratic, by big majorities, and which have not elected a Republican in 30 years or more. They rejoice that Judge Eugene Daily and Congressman M. H. Thatcher were reelected by record majorities and that some Negroes and fair minded white people were thoughtful enough to give the colored candidate for Board of Education an encouraging vote, and that in Chicago Oscar DePriest, a colored man was elected to the United States Congress, the first to be elected to that body since 1901. They rejoice over the contribution the race in Kentucky and over the nation made to the great Republican victory. Great Work Of State Colored Organization Praised Personal expressions, telegrams and letters from local, state and white and holored Republiran leaders at Chicago and Washington in appreciation of the contribution made by the Colored State Organization to the success of the party in Kentucky have been received at headquarters here Senator Adelbert Roberts, the Western Chairman, says the Kentucky colored organization was the best in his district. Congressman J. M. Robsion, State Campaign Chairman, is loud in his praise of the colored organization. Not only did it get results, but it was one of the best irganized, and more systematically and judiciously conducted than any we have ever had, white or colored, said this great leader, who is happiest of all over the victory. The state work among colored people was directed by the Publicity Chairman I. Willis Cole, who served instead of Dr. T. T. Wendell, chair of the organization, because of his practice found that he could not give the time. Rev. J. Welby Broaddus, Chairman of the Speakers Bureau, directed the speakers; Mrs. O. K. Glass was chairman of the women's work, and Mrs. M. L. Copeland was organizer for the women. Mr. W. H. Steward was secretary and Dr. W. T. Merchant, treasurer of the state organization. These active leaders had an able group of assistants in the organization, publicity and speakers departments, the office was busy day and (Continued on Page 8)
