COLORED REPUBLICAN LEADERS OPEN CAMPAIGN AT PADUCAH
False Democrat Propaganda Hit; Hundreds Clamor for Hoover Buttons
(By T. A. Lawrence.)
(Special to the Louisville Leader.)
Paducah, Ky., Sept. 25.---The Republican campaign for Hoover and Curtis for President and Vice President, respectfully, was formally (launched?) among colored people of the (State?)here last night at the Elks Hall by Rev. J. Welby Broaddus, of Richmond, Ky., chairman of the Colored Republican State Speakers' Bureau, Mrs. M. L. Copeland of Hopkinsville, Ky., National Organizer of the women for the Western Division, and I. Willis Cole, of Louisville, National Organizer and Publicity Chairman. The speakers who came directly from the Colored State Headquarters at Louisville were greeted by a crowd which taxed the spacious Elks Hall to standing capacity. Long before the meeting was called to order by the County chairman, G. E. Marshall, the hall was crowded with representative men and women, Republican leaders from the city, and from all of the adjoining counties. On the platform were the ministers of the several denominations, Dr. D. H. Anderson, President of the Western Kentuck
y College; Editor T. A. Lawrence of the Paducah Lighthouse; Mrs. Barbara Bradley, chairman of the women voters of the county, and other leaders. In the audience were some of Paducah's most prominent citizens, including some of those who had been almost persuaded by the false Al Smith propaganda that is being spread over the state by would be Negro Democratic leaders and white Democrats of the several communities and counties, who believe the Negro to be the same easy going, thoughtless, careless, emotional and ignorant individual that he was twenty and thirty years ago.
Speakers Score False Democrat Propaganda; Those on Fence Turned for Repuublican Candidates
In Paducah as in other places this propaganda had gained much ground and loyal Republicans here and there were much concerned by the talk of a few Negroes who had declared that they would leave the party and vote for Smith. On a building a few doors from the Republican rally meeting, was a large sign telling about the headquarters of the Independent Political Club of Colored Voters of Paducah. Some of these officers and a few followers were on hand to heard the speakers out of curiosity, it is said, but after Rev. Broaddus, Mr. Cole and Mrs. Copeland had shot full of holes Hoover Klan propaganda, the lie about Smith going to repeal the prohibition law and bring the saloon back, and their listeners silent, interest and convinced eyes about the Al Smith tariff and immigration platform in comparison with that of Herbert (Continued on Page 8)
