CATCH DETECTIVE ASSASSIN OFFICER WOOD KILLED AS HE SAT IN POLICE CAR Daring Cold-Blooded Act Deplored By White And Colored Citizens; Laid To Rest Wednesday Note: Just as the Leader closed its forms with the story of the assassination and the funeral of Detective William Wood, by Jim Brown, Leader Staff Reporter, Glenn "Red" Kehoe, white bandit was lodged in jail here late Thursday, charged with the murder and with several local robberies. It had been reported the Detective Page Hemphill, partner of Wood, thought that he bit the man whom he shot at two times. Chow, who was traced to Dayton, Ohio carries a painful pistol wound in his side. Kehoe, who has been identified by Detective Hemphill, neither denied the charge nor admitted that he committed the murder when questioned by Chief of Detectives M. Ray Yarberry. The bandits statement: "I won't say I done it, and I won't say I didn't do it," Kehoe said, time after time. "If you say I did, I might have. If I did, I can pay. How do they kill 'em down there? Do they hang or electrocute?" By Jim Brown All Louisville was shocked when word was passed around that Officer William Wood of the local detective force had been slain. Officer Wood was attacked while on duty by an unknown character who cowardly shot him while he was seated at the wheel in the police car on Seventh near Walnut last Saturday night. Wood's partner, Page Hemphill, unable to cope with the assassin on the run, is believed to have shot the assassin while the latter escaped thru a nearby alley. Walnut Street, by J. W. Owsley who also shot John Henry Scruggs during an argument over a dice game, died at the City Hospital this week, and Owsley is now held on the second charge of murder, and without bond. Scruggs died a few minutes after he was taken to the hospital and Hays was not expected to live. White Organizer Fleeced Negroes FINED FOR BEING DRUNK IN AUTO Charles Rogers was fined $10.00 and given 15 days' jail sentence for being drunk and for reckless driving, when arraigned in Police Court Monday morning. Miss Churchill, however, has just a few more votes than Mrs. Naomi Orr, Danville, Ill., and Miss Ruby Stone, Knoxville, Tenn., who are in second and third places respectively. Fourth place is held by Miss Penelope Dawson of Cincinnati, a young woman who was nominated for the campaign last week. Miss Mollye Gayle of New Liberty, Ky., dropped from fourth to fifth place. and Miss Viola Crawford, Louisville, moved up from eighth place to a tie with Miss Dorothy Webb, Louisville for sixth place. Miss Lois Shaefer, young high school girl, dropped from sixth to eighth place. But she will be back. Just two more weeks from Tuesday and the first period will come to a close. The candidates are expected to put forth a much greater effort from now until the close of the first period. Tuesday December 12, when the value of the subscriptions in votes will be decreased as shown in the schedule of votes on page 12. New nominations received during the week were, Mrs. J. S.
