TAKES JURY JUST TEN MINUTES TO BRING IN FIRST DEGREE MURDER VERDICT -- IS COOL AS DECISION IS READ FOR KILLING WIFE It took the jury only ten minutes to bring in its verdict against John Baker last Friday night at 10 o'clock. A verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree, a punishment of death in the electric chair for the killing of his wife, Mrs. Marie Baker, Thursday morning of last July, while she was at work as elevator operator at Husch Brothers department store. The murder which was regarded as one of the most brutal, premeditated, and cold-blooded in the truest sense, shocked the community, as it spread like wild fire. Mrs. Baker, only 22 years of age, was well known. Broadway Temple where she was a faithful member was a mass of humanity from the choir stand out into the streets on the Sunday afternoon of the funeral services. --[Photo] JOHN BAKER -- Not since the trial of the slayer of Albert S. White years ago has a case attracted so much attention. Standing room was at a premium from the calling of the case Thursday morning of last week by Judge Burgevin, until the rendering of the verdict Friday night at 10 o'clock. Thursday, day and night, and part of Friday was taken up in the examination of the many witnesses for the prosecution, and those used by the attorney for Baker as character witnesses. Baker was represented by Attorneys Hubbard, Ropke and Newsum. Attorney Hubbard, who was chief of the defense, was ever or the alert to register his objection to testimony offered by the prosecution, using every method known to keep out certain evidence. At a loss to know just what Baker's plea would be, it soon developed that it would be that of "insanity". The opinion of a local physician was presented to prove that Baker was insane. Testimony from associates told of his peculiar actions just before the murder was offered along with a record of the family showing that there was a streak of insanity. Under the brilliant cross examination of W. Clarke Otte, the Assistant Commonwealth Attorney, who made an able and eloquent plea in presenting the case t o the jurors in the opening of the case, was the [testimony?] of insanity shot to pieces. When the testimony of the officers who arrested Baker was offered a boomerang was thrown into the defense. A signed statement from Baker was presented by the officers. When placed on the stand Baker testified that the first shot was accidental, and even though four other shots were fired after the first shot, he didn't know what happened. In the signed confession to the officers Baker admitted that he put his gun in his pocket to carry to a repair shop, but in passing the store in which his wife worked he stopped, and after an argument in the elevator he shot her five times.
