Mrs. Dillard Roughly Handled By Mean Conductor
Mrs. Bertha Dillard, 3600 Greenwood, Shawnee 3582 J. was roughly treated on a west bound Oak Street car about 3:10 P. M. Wednesday, by conductor No. 430, when she resented [illegible] remarks made to her [by] three white women.
In a statement to the Leader's representative, Mrs. Dillard said she and her eight-year-old little girl Jessie Bell were about to board the car at Preston and Oak Streets, when three white women also approached the car, seemingly in a hurry. One of them remarked, "That's the way "niggers" always do, get ahead of you."
Because she attempted to reply the conductor shouted to her, "If you don't shut up your mouth, I will stop my car and put you off.' He attempted to carry out the threat as Brook Street, when Messrs. C. W. King and George Robinson, who got on the car at that corner told him not to strike Mrs. Dillard again, and to leave her alone, after he had struck her in the face and caused bruises about the body and arms in the attempt to get her off, Mrs. Dillarl essaying to take care of herself.
In reporting the matter to Superintendent Fishback, he told Mrs. Dillard he was glad to learn of such conduct on the part of the employees and would look after the matter. The only thing done thus far, however, has been the changing of the conductor to another car on the same line. Mrs. Dillard has placed the case into the hands of attorneys.
