Shoots His Best Friend--Wm. Jones In Critical Condition From Shots By Boy He Fathered--South Louisville Citizens Enraged Great excitement prevailed in South Louisville last Saturday morning when Geo. Jones is employed at the L. and N. shops from 11 o'clock P.M. till 7 o'clock A.M. He had just returned from work, when be informed Phillips that a jewelry collector was at the door to see him. Phillips responded with such an unexpected and unwarranted flow of vulgarity and abuse as caused Jones to order him out of the house until he could act better. A few minutes later Jones started for the grocery. He met Philips at an alley near the home, who, without an exchange of words, began firing at Jones. Missing him after two shots Phillips fired three more times, striking Jones in the head and side. Jones was completely blinded by the shot which passed thru his forehead, it becoming necessary to remove one of his eyes during the week. After Phillips had emptied his revolver, he was in the act of reloading, and again shooting Jones as he lay on the ground, but was commanded to drop his gun by one of the several citizens who had reached the scene, armed, with a feeling of making Phillips pay for the dastardly deed with his own life. Jones had endeared himself to the white and colored citizens of South Louisville and Phillips, who was gotten away by officers before any [missing] was done him, is now in jail without bail, not only because of the nature of his crime, but also because it is feared that the law might not be allowed to take its course. Phillips is stamped as one of the very lowest of cowards and ingrates, and it is hoped that he pay the extreme penalty for his crime. Shoots His Best Friend--Wm. Jones In Critical Condition From Shots By Boy He Fathered--South Louisville Citizens Enraged
Great excitement prevailed in South Louisville last Saturday morning when Geo. Phillips, 22, shot his best friend, Wm. Jones, past 50, five times, completely blinding him, and leaving him in a condition at the City Hospital that may mean his death.
Jones, who is one of the best known and best liked citizens of his community, lives at 2210 Klairer Avenue. Philips, known in the community as a bootlegger and a gambler, a good for nothing who, having lost favor with his relatives and shunned by former friends, found a Good Samaritan in Jones who took him into his home, fed and sheltered him when he could not do otherwise. Jones' home has been Phillips' home, at Jones expense for several years. He tried to be a father, he was indeed a friend.
The whole community prays for the recovery of Jones, that he may again have sight. Jones is a member of the Green Street Baptist Church and a thirty-third degree Mason.
WANTS THE NAMES OF STREETS THAT SOUND LIKE NEGROES CHANGED
Failing in every effort to keep good, law-abiding colored citizens from buying property in the West End beyond Thirtieth Street in that community knows as "Shawnee Island," the white folks of that district whose cause has been heretofore championed by a well knows Catholic Father, called on the Board of Public Works Monday afternoon with a request that an ordinance be introduced in the General Council changing the name Walnut, Chestnut, Madison and Magazine Streets between the railroad and the river. The committee told the board that the change in name would enhance the value of the property, that many persons would not buy in that district because several colored families now lived in the "choice" neighborhood.
Board members expressed themselves as opposing the plan, as it is the policy to give all streets from end to end wherever possible. Thus it seems that our good white Christian brethren and sisters will not even chance to feel that in their "heaven" they are living on different streets than Negroes. They may not have the satisfaction of fooling themselves into believing that there are no Negroes within ten miles where the name of the streets on which they live are called the same old Walnut, Chestnut, Madison and Magazine.
