OFFICERS SCOTT AND DOWNS CATCH BIG JEWELRY THIEF Had Package Valued At More Than $2,500 When Arrested Colored uniform officers William F. Downs and William Scott made a big catch last Friday evening about 8:30. They were in wait for another thief on Ninth near Chestnut streets, where the man the authorities had been on the lookout for bobbed up. William Wilson, 28 years, was the man the detectives wanted. He was caught by officers Downs and Scott with a package containing jewelry valued at between $2,700 and $3,000. Wilson told the officers that the package was fiven him by two other alleged crooks. John Williams and Sylvester Gunn for spending the night at his home. Williams and Gunn have admitted several robberies in the Highlands. It is said by the officers that their method was to visit the homes during the afternoon, ring the door bells, and if no one answered, ransack them. If some one answered the door the men asked for work, it is said. The cases of Wilson, Williams and Gunn were Aug. 2, were laid over to Grasd Jury September 27, 1928. The catch of Wilson is one among the several good jobs that must be credited to Downs and Scott, and the other colored officers. ADOPT GREAT PROGRAM; TO LAUNCH BIG MEMBERSHIP DRIVE Officers Elected; Contribute To Warley-Cole Fund (By Dr. E. E. Underwood, Reporter). Cynthiana, Ky., July 28, 1928. The 35th Annual Session of the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias, closde here yesterday, after having adopted a forward looking program for the new fraternal year. The adoption of this program was in keeping with the recommendation made by the progressive Grand Chancellor, Prof. G. W. Saffell, Jr., of Shelbyville, who is pointing the way to higher and better things for Pythians of the State. Plans were effected for a state-wide membership drive and an intensive advertising campaign for new members. Authority was also iiven to the officers of the Grand Lodge to immediately organize a Pythian Athletic Association for the State, which will promote base ball, foot ball, field meet and other athletic activities. An educational department is also to be established which will provide funds for scholarships for our needy and aspiring young people. The lodges in their local communities are to foster and encourage the establishment of colored hospitals. An united social program is to be inaugurated by which lodges in adjacent territory are to combine in social entertainments, thereby bringing them into closer fraternal contact. There is to be a consolidation and reduction of the number of districts, thereby enabling the Order to do better and more intensive work. The progress program of Gov. Flem D. Sampson was also indorsed, and our racial group urged to cooperate for a greater Kentucky. The Grand Lodge pledged itself to assist every deserving enterprise that means for the betterment and advancement of the race. A feature of the meeting was a liberal contribution to the Cole-Warley Defense Fund, thereby going on record as thoroughly in accord with the spirit of a forceful and courageous Negro press. The Grand Lodge had the usual fraternal activities during the week. A new feature was the Mardi Gras parade, which took place Monday night, and which was highly enjoyed and witnessed by hundreds of citizens of both races along the line of march. The local committee provided a program of banquets and entertainments which was highly enjoyed by the visitors in the beautiful little city of Cynthiana. The Gala Day on Thursday brought to the city hundreds of visitors from the surrounding towns. The parade under the commands of Brigadier General, W. W. Wilson was one of the best in the history of the Grand Lodge. Headed by a brass band, Uniform Rank Companies and male members of the Grand Lodge on foot, with sister Calantheans in beautifully decorated automobiles, the parade passed through the principal streets of the city to the Macedonia Baptist church were a feat- (Continued on page 8) SCOTT_MIKE GOOD CATCH A RECORD A fACT Widely C'U'C alated North.
Headed by a brass band, Uniform Rank Companies and male members of the Grand Lodge on foot, with sister Calantheans in beautifully decorated automobiles, the parade passed through the principal streets of the city to the Macedonia Baptist church were a feat- (Continued on page 8)
