Tom Heflin Still After DePriest Democrat Senator Instructs Waiters Not To Serve De Priest Advises Them to Send For Him Should Colored Congressman Insist on Eating in Senate Restaurant Move School from Mean Town Hit Opposers of Ira T. Bryant HONOR BROADWAY'S PASTOR Boston, Mass., Oct. 7. - A testimonial attended by several thousand was given in honor of Dr. Benjamin Wilson Swain, the marrying parson who for 17 years was pastor of the Columbus Ave. A. M. E. Zion Church here last Monday night, before his departure for Louisville, Ky., where he accepted a transfer to Broadway Temple as pastor, effective October 1. The transfer was forwarded from bishop W. J. Walls to Bishop E. D. W. Jones, in Louisville, Ky. Dr. Swain was appointed to Columbus Avenue by the late Bishop Walters at a time when the church was mortgaged for $41,000. During the pastorate of Dr. Swain the debt has been reduced to $13,000, several thousand dollars improvements have been placed upon the church and a parsonage, valued at $9,000 purchased. Dr. Swain was known here as "the marrying parson," having united 1,847 couples during his 17 years. Of this number 318 were white. Dr. Swain's average was slightly more than two couples a week. At the testimonial a purse was presented Dr. Swain and among the speakers were Mayor Quinn of Cambridge and ex-mayor James M. Curley of Boston. IN PULPIT HERE LAST SUNDAY: DR. CROOKE GOES TO CONNECTICUT DR. Swain, the very prominent minister who was transferred from Boston to Broadway Temple to succeed Rev. W. O. Carson who was transferred to Big Zion Church at Mobile, Ala., met his congregation Sunday morning and preached an able sermon. Other important changes made by Bishop E. D. W. Jones which was made after the reading of the appointments at the conference close was that of Dr. A. A. Crooke, pastor of Jacob St. Tabernacle, who was transferred to Waterbury, Conn., the Rev. J. H. D. Bailey of taht place succeeding Rev. Crooke at Jacob St. Other local appointments were Rev. E. C. Tucker of Key West, Fla., to Stoner's Memoral; Rev. Mrs. Mary E. Washington, one of the only two women elders in the church to Fifteenth St. Church. Royal Arch Masons Meet AMONG THE ROYAL ARCH MASONIC LEADERS [Photo] M. E. COMPANION W. H. Race Voters Are Not Easily Fooled RECORD OF "ONLY PAPER WHICH FIGHTS FOR NEGROES" RELATED For Harrison and Starck 60 Days Ago; Record Of Judge Fox Alone Merits Straight G.O.P. Vote, Says Writer The Louisville Leader Please allow space in your valuable paper for what I want to say about a matter I feel you and thousands of colored voters in Louisville will be interested in. I [illegible] one of these kind of Republicans who cannot stand idly by and allow myself made a fool of, along with others who may accept all and say nothing. We have in Louisville four Negro weekly newspapers, and I feel that each fills its place in the community, and in its own way renders some indespensible service to the community and to the race it particularly serves, and I can hardly believe that either of the four papers feel that it is the only paper that is rendering a service though each paper may follow a different policy in so doing, without any one feeling that it is the only paper which the race can depend, on to fight its battles. I know that no one of these papers has a right to feel that way about it, and I was surprised when I saw in one of them last week that one or more of our business men had agreed to give $50.00 according to that paper, to help it because it is the only paper that can be depended upon to fight the battles of the race. Doubts If Expression Was Made By Any Business Man I do not doubt that one or more business men agreed to help that paper, for it always needs help and I understand that Mr. Waddy is a regular helper, but I doubt whether any Louisville business man knowing the papers and their policies, and political records said that paper was the only reliable race paper. They might have said that paper was the only one the race could not depend on, and especially for sound political advice and honest political leadership. If any of our business men had such a thought and made such a statement that paper should have been ashamed to print it. But tha. paper has been able to put over so many tricks and applauded by four or five blind adherents that it feels it has a right to try to fool all the people any time it wants to. Do No Believe Money Or Noise Will Hurt Republican Vote; Cites Record If there are any Negroes who may not vote for Mayor Harrison and the Republican ticket November 5, I really do not believe it will be because of any amount of money contributed to this paper or any noise that paper may make. I do not believe there are fifty colored votes in Louisville that paper can influence one way or the other. I have the records of 1927 and of 1928 before me. I also have the record of the paper itself. That paper said last week in the same article that in its fight against the Republican party it voices the sentiment of hundreds of people. This same thing was said in 1927 and 1928, but in 1927 by actual count not more than 250 colored people in all Louisville voted for the Democratic ticket headed by one of the best candidates for Mayor the Democratic party has ever offered to the people and in 1928 after an expenditure of hundreds of dollars and weekly noise made by this paper there were even less colored votes counted for Al Smith. At a meeting sponsored by that paper with a leading Bishop and other prominent out of town speakers not more than 33 persons were in the audience until after a big Republican rally, when many people look in on the meeting out of curiosity. Wiggly Wobbly In Politics; Praised Harrison And Starck Since 1919 this paper has had no political policy, but has served the party that paid the best price. Its politics has been Republican one year, Democratic the next. In one campaign it has said in big bold black type that the Republican party has its short-comings, but it is the better of the two and therefore we advise Negroes to vote the straight Republican ticket." The next year that paper has said the Republican party is composed of a bunch of Negro hating Ku Klux Klan, Lily Whites and we advise Negroes to put them out of office." And yet since 1927 this paper has paid the highest tribute to the Republican party leaders. Just a few week ago that paper said editorially that Mayor Harrison and Judge Starck of the Police Court should be renominated and elected. Mayor Harrison was characterized as the most popular mayor Louisville ever had, and would be re-elected. Judge Starck has come in for frequent praise and commendation but now this paper is advising the colored people to vote for Mr. Reidling for mayor and the whole Democratic ticket.
