A SLAP AT THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE NEGRO CITIZENS OF LOUISVILLE Why does Charles W. Anderson think that the voters in 58th Legislative District, Louisville, Kentucky will permit Attorney Perry W. Howard from Washington, D. C., to advise us in a primary fight? This is a family fight of the people of Louisville--it's our business and outsiders must not meddle. Why did Charles W. Anderson get an Ex-Mayor--a has been--Arthur R. Johnson, from a small village near Cleveland, Ohio, to come to Kentucky's largest city and meddle with our affairs? They both should remember the advice of Bert Williams: "If things don't concern you let them alone." Attorney Howard and Mr. Johnson are not to be blamed. They were misled by the Anderson organization. We need no national speakers in a primary fight. And the friends in Anderson's camp who invited them down were very unfair to our National Committeemen from Mississippi and the Ex-Mayor of the Ohio village. Just as Anderson stated: "All Negro Business leaders are ignorant and inefficient", by his action in bringing these men here, he tells the world that we in Louisville are not competent to attend to our own family affairs, in politics. Attorney Howard knows it is beneath his dignity as a member of the National Republican Committee to stoop down and enter a primary fight. In his position he does not represent Anderson and his group--He represents the whole Republican party. Just as Anderson misled the two prominent citizens, he thinks he can pull the wool over the eyes of the voters in the 58th District and mislead them. Since Anderson thinks nobody in Louisville is intelligent enough to run business or politics, ask him why he does not go to Washington or Miles Heights to live. This act is certainly a SLAP AT THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE NEGRO CITIZENS OF LOUISVILLE --Lee L. With the exception of the power plant, which does not have sufficient capacity to furnish the heat, light and power needed, buildings and equipment are in good condition." It is predicted that the members of the 58th Legislative District will go to the polls Saturday and nominate Lee L. Brown as the Republican candidate to the State Legislature, not only because he has earned it, and [deserves?] it, but also as a repudiation against the Negro would-be hoodlums who have been parading up and down the district during the week in their malicious attacks against Brown. Col. Joe Bowles and other men of the race who have meant so much to the political and civic life of the community, in their effort to win the nomination for Charles W. Anderson, who in the minds of right thinking citizens, has done nothing to merit the support of the voters. Lee Brown has served the Republican party consistently for over 30 years. He has been election officer and precinct worker in the dangerous years of 1903 and 1905 and 1907 when a Negro Republican worker risked his life, if he worked at the polls in the old 10th Ward; he has made the race three times, when there was not a possible chance to win, thereby keeping the spirit and the idea of a Negro for the Legislature alive in the public mind and so caused the party leaders to agree to a Colored candidate in 1935. Lee Brown has been actively connected with every organization designed for racial progress and uplift. He was secretary of the old Out-look Committee that preceded [the?] N. A. A. C. P. and was more militant, locally, than that organization in fighting for the race. He was executive secretary of the Louisville Association for the Advancement of Colored People when that organization was really doing something for the Negroes of Louisville; Brown has gone before the owners of the tobacco factories of Louisville and demanded better wages and better working conditions for Colored men and women; he was active in the Y. M. C. A. and is active in the Boy Scouts. He has written for national and local papers, always putting Louisville Negroes in the best light. He has boosted Negro enterprises and individuals and has served this community unselfishly and whole heartedly; throughout thirty odd years Brown has been an asset and a credit to his race and community--that's why we are for him and trust in the common-sense and the sense of fairplay of fellow Republicans to nominate him Saturday, August 3. Anderson Has Done Nothing Charles W. Anderson does not merit support. He has not lived in Louisville three years and in that time has done absolutely nothing for the Negroes of Louisville. He is concerned solely with himself, Charles W. Anderson. In fact, he is not a legal resident of the 58th District and if elected could be arrested--he moved into the district solely to run for the legislature because he was thinking of publicity and notoriety for Anderson; anybody who knows Anderson knows he would not have moved into the Foster home, 1327 W. Mozetta Wright, a woman who doesn't know what it is all about, and who would be better off at home, but for whom we, anyway have too much regard as a woman to turn the light on, has the audacity to throw mud at a newspaper publisher because his newspaper carries headlines or publicity for all political parties. These and other Anderson leaders are not even sparing Col. Bowles the old soldier and patriot. They are allowed to lie about and attack men for their superiors in character and all worthwhile things, men who have served the race, party and community in a way that could not be paid for in dollars and cents, and who helped make it possible for Anderson to move his body into Louisville and his trunk into the 58th Legislative District in time to run for the Legislature when run- (Continued on page 8) Dr. Waring Again Leads Women MINISTERS HEAR JUDGE KAVANAUGH In a speech before the Baptist Ministers and Deacons last Monday morning, Judge J. J. Kavanaugh, Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor, says that for more than 20 years he had championed religious freedom. "As I understand religion, it is to make men better, kinder and more understanding of each other." Judge Kavanaugh said that he was there as a Republican because of inheritance. "Over 50 years ago," said he, "my father and the late Senator Bradley and other noble minded citizens founded the Republican party in Louisville, and dedicated their lives to lifting a race that had just thrown off the shackles of slavery. The history of the Republican party is so entwined with the history of the colored people since 1865 that its history may be that of the colored people. The Republican party is under a debt to the colored people, and this is not [said?] to appeal to your votes, but it is [a statement?] of facts," said Judge [Kavanaugh?]. Rhea Winner Says Chairman JUDGE CLEMENTS SAYS HE WILL CARRY EVERY [DISTRICT?] Rhea Has Never Failed His Friends [And?] They Are Legion, Says He Thomas S. Rhea will be nominated for Governor of Kentucky at the Democratic Statewide Primary next Saturday, August 3, and he will be elected Governor in November according to Judge Earle C. Clements, State campaign manager for Mr. Rhea, in a statement released to the press today. Judge Clements predicted that Mr. Rhea would be indorsed by every congressional district in the state, except one, and in that district he would receive "a 50-50 break" He estimated that 300,000 votes would be cast in the Democratic primary and that of this number Mr. Rhea would receive 165,000 and that the remaining 135,000 would be distributed among the four other candidates. Text of Judge Clements statement follows: "Thomas S. Rhea of Russellville will be the nominee of the Democratic Party for Governor of Kentucky. He will be elected Governor of the Commonwealth in November. Late estimates of marjorities that Mr. Rhea will receive in the various counties of the State at the primary on Saturday, August 3, convince us here at headquarters that one primary will suffice. In this balloting, Mr. Rhea will receive Kentucky's Democracy's mandate to serve as its standard-bearer in November." "Claiming the election before [voters?] have had an opportunity to express their will at the ballot-box is an "old political custom" in which I, personally, do not take much stock. [The?] 'biggest claimers', as [experience has?] shown again and again, are often ['the?] sorriest losers'. Such claiming of [all?] the votes in sight is an ancient political device often employed by campaign managers to bolster a losing battle. It is an infallible sign of known weaknesses, either of the candidate, himself, or the proposals that he espouses." "Estimated majorities, checked and rechecked, by trusted leaders in every county of Kentucky, indicates that Mr. Rhea's fight is won. He will carry every congressional district in Kentucky with the exception of one and in that district we expect him to did qualifications to serve in that high office. It was the occasion of a monstrous rally to announce to the voters of Jefferson County the candidacy of the Hon. Thos. S. Rhea, and to give him an opportunity to assign the reasons for the faith within him. Mr. Rhea in brief pledged, that if he became the Governor of Kentucky, he would give this city and county that recognition which had hitherto been denied them. That he would guarantee us those much talked of four lane roads--that he would do his part to lift Kentucky in the scale of education; by increased school facilities and better pay for teachers,--that he would advocate an old age pension that poor houses might be abolished,--that he would inaugurate reforms in all our penal and charitable institutions,--that every man shall have a fair and impartial trial and that no man's life or liberty might be taken without due process of law. Mr. Rhea promises to support party nominees whether chosen in accordance with his wishes or not, as he regards the party greater than any man. This is the land mark of a new era in Kentucky politics that will long be remembered as the first instance on record when over 3000 Negroes freely and of their own accord participated in a great Democratic Primary demonstration. Of the thousands of Negroes who were present, not a single one could take exception to his program so far as it touched their interest and their expectations. Mr. Rhea's clean and candid discussion of the issues involved in this campaign evoked tremendous applause and as a vote getting speech, must go on record as among the greatest. To say that his delineation of the facts and circumstances leading up to and encircling the principal issues in the campaign met the most responsive [approval?] of his hearers, is putting [the?] case most mildly.
