Colored People Resent Republican Administration "Jim Crowing" At State Fair SEVERAL GET THEIR ADMISSION MONEY BACK The Republican administration breaks another precedent and gives the Negro in Louisville another slap in the face. The State Fair grounds, a place where all classes and colors have gathered from all parts of the city, state and nations, for a number of years, for recreation, amusement and business; a place where thousands of people are too busy getting out of the way of one another to think about little mean things, and especially the color of ones skin, a place where nothing has ever occurred that would cause an iota of ill feeling between the races; a place where the rankest Democratic administration has never felt it necessary to place a petition bearing large, glaring words, "For Colored People," they never deemed it a thing that should be done; they did not advocate the separation of the races in the public parks, and at the State Fair grounds; but a precedent has been broken by the Republican administration, the ship of the Negro of ye yesterday. Yes, they came to the conclusion that it would be a step in the right direction to gets hundreds of a certain class of white Democratic votes and to get a better "toe hold" on those of race hating type that they already have of both parties. This was done this week in face of the disgust, disappointment and opposition of more than fifty per cent of the colored population, faithfuls of the Republican party; in face of the fact that the Lincoln Independent Party, with a full fledged ticket; in face of the fact that a few of a certain type of the race are selling out their very souls for a mess of potage, and are becoming race traitors, stooping to the lowest depth in putting out malicious propaganda against members of their race at the behest of Republican bosses, who under their very noses are hurdling up their flesh and blood in a small corner at the State Fair Grounds like hogs in a pen. But the trick might work one way, but it is not working the other. Hundreds of colored people have resented the insult. Many of those who respect themselves and demand that others do likewise, asked for their money back on seeing the conditions, got it and left the grounds. The party has been bitterly assailed during the week, and many who doubted the wisdom of the Linocln Independent movement have realized that their eyes were open, but they were sound asleep. And more and more the Republcian party is going to be made to realize that it cannot continue to enact unfair, unfriendly and unAmerican measures against the rights, happiness and general welfare of his colored brothers as a political trick to get certain white votes, and hold their respect, confidence and loyalty. The old beaten idea that the Republican party is the ship and all else is the sea holds no place in the mind of the thoughtful Negro of today, but rather the Rooseveltian idea of, "All men up and no man down." Bishop Fallows Assails Ku Klux Klan The News and Leader invites public to Lions Garden Every man, woman and child in Louisville and Vicinity are invited to be the guests of the News and Leader at Lion's Garden, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week day and night. The Anniversary Celebration of these two race papers at this beautiful Park will be the last public getting together in open air outing and entertainment of the season and it will be one of the greatest and grandest occasions. It is not necessary for us to call the attention of our readers to just what these two newspapers have meant to the race here in Louisville. A first class Negro paper is a vital necessity for the growth, stability and [progress?] of the race. Every worthy race paper ont only keeps the race informed by uncompromising fights for the rights of the race, but publishes the injustices done it and pleads at the bar of justice for equality as guaranteed in the constitution of the country. As stated by a well known citizen a few weeks ago: "The people of Louisville do not put the proper value on the worth of the News and Leader to this community. They do not appreciate the invaluable service that the race is rendered by them and the job of the colored editors is pretty near a thankless one. But if the New and Leader should go out of business members of the race would readily comprehend their value, the community would suffer an irreparable loss. Hundreds of dollars would be spent however, in getting such a newspaper man here as would be needed with these two newspapers gone. It is such a realization on the part of Mesdames Florence Moss Blackwell and Ada D. Locke, who are prime movers in the idea of such a program as is to be given next week for the benefit of the News and Leader, as an appreciation of their worth and service. We again all the attention of our readers to the whole page and other advertisements of the three days and night program and the mention of the many of Louisville's most gifted personages who are to appear. Again the News and Leader extends a most cordial welcome to the public. Mothers are especially invited to bring their little babes and the whole family and spend with them three days of outing pleasure and entertainment. Dr. Horace Morris and Miss Williams Miss R. Louise Williams is in charge of the children in games and contests Thursday and Friday afternoons at 3 o'clock. Dr. Morris will have charge of the babies and all the children News and Leader days next week Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rev. Williams the News, Leader and "reporter" By Rev. Noah W. Williams. "Did you read the Louisville News and Leader last week? Well, you should get them and read. They hit the Searcy controlled, so-called Republican machine a knockout blow. All that he advocates of the present "lily-white" Republican machine can say is, look what the Republicans did for us in the days of Abraham Lincoln? What we want to know is, "What are the ones who are now in control of local affairs doing for us?" While they are looking to the present and future they ask the colored people in Louisville to look back fifty years. My gues sis that they will find out how many are looking back on the 8th day of November. Speaking of the Louisville News and Leader reminds me of another thing the advocates of the Republican machine are saying to take our minds off of the main issue. They say Warley and Cole were paid thousands of dollars by the Democrats for the use of their papers. Nonsense. Everybody knows that every newspaper in the city, white and colored, are paid for the use of them during every political campaign For instance, the Kentucky, Reporter, edited by Mr. Berry, put out ten thousand copies last week and gave them away, advocating the Republican machine. Do you think Mr. Berry is doing that for nothing Do you suppose the Herald, or Times, or Courier-Journal, or Post, is advocating their respective parties for nothing. How could any of them run? It is the common boast of the workers for the Republican machine that they are passing pictures of Quin, or passing out other literature, and are being paid more than they ever got before. Of course they are paid. How could they give their time otherwise? But to say that Warley and Cole got five thousand dollars each or for both of them, is pure nonsense. Of coures I do not know how much any one is paid to give their time to the Democrats, Republican or Lincoln Independent campaigns. I do know that the Republicans have put up signs in the parks setting aside a small territory for colored people and that never in the history of Louisville has that ever been done until they got into power by the votes of colored people. I know that it is a question of common notoriety that Mr. Searsy, the head of the Republican party in Louisville, and in Kentucky said that all he had to do was to buy the "neggar preachers" and vote all the "niggars." It is not a question as to how much is paid for newspapers, or workers by any of the parties, but does the present Republican machine deserve to be supported by the colored people? That is the question and the only question. So let the supporters of them come forward and tell us not what Lincoln or Grant, or Lovejoy, or Douglass did but what are Smith and Searcy doing. Mayor Smith anWAtmeusissisETA of the Park Commission that put up the signs segregating the colored people in the parks. Whoever is elected will be under the control of Chesley Searcy if the Republicans win, and it is the Republican machine that is responsible for the humiliation of our race. Many will not vote at all; quite a number will vote the Democratic ticket, and I believe a larger number will vote the Lincoln Independent ticket. But all are determined to, if possible, to beat the present Republican machine and no matter what route you take so that is accomplished. Noah W. Williams THE NEWS AND LEADER'S ANNIVERSARY PRIVILEGES FOR SALE. The various privileges to be had at Lion's Garden Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week, News and Leader anniversary celebration days, will be disposed of at the Louisville News' office, 1006 W. Chestnut St., Monday, September 19 at 6 o'clock p.m. Any one who wants a privilege is invited. Rev. H. T. Medford went to Maud, Ky., to lecture to a young people's organization in that vicinity Thursday night of this week. "Consider the source" On hearing of a rumor that was going the rounds, a good friend said to the friend involved, "your friends and all the people know you your character and all you stand for. Every one knows the motive behind what is being written and said: that it is a malicious lie. Nobody believes it. If I were you I would not bother about it. "Consider the source." This brings to our mind the attempt of certain Negroes, hireling of boss George of the Republican party, in their attempt to abuse and villify those who are leaders of the Lincoln Independent movement, and we would not write nary a word. if not like the teacher we did not want to see that the pupil got the lesson right. They can say nothing worth while for the good of the Republican party, and they try to get the public mind from the real issue by mis-representation of facts and ridicule directed at the editors of the News and Leader and others who are interested in the salvation of the Negro politically, the election of Colored men to positions he was entitled to in the party, not so much because he is a Negro, but because he is a full pledged republican entitled to all the rights of his party because of years of service and party loyalty, but denied him by the bosses. These tools and dupes of the machine would carry out the wish of their political masters by heralding far and near that men of their race who have the manhood and independence to speak out for the political freedom of the race, a movement that is national in its scope have sold out, and in glaring headings the Kentucky Reporter carries the caption: "Yes Sold Out Again." Newspapers and certain Negroes were hardly known in Louisville and certainly not recognized by the Republican leaders until these men of manhood and self-respect let it be known that they would no longer be used by the Republican party, launching a party of their own. Twenty thousand extra copies of this small sheet while until the Independent movement made it possible only a few over two or three hundred were printed. The editors of this sheet who also hold a job with the machine remarked to a friend that the Republican party was rotten to the core, denounced it vehemently claiming that they were disgusted with it, and would like to see it defeated, yet they could hardly afford to lose their job. But the Independent movement has made it possible for them to print thousands of papers, and make more money. and the Republican is now the ship and all else is the sea, and they too have joined in the fight against the independence of the Negro, and are shooting ridicule at their fellow race men, fellow members of the Fourth Estate. Deep down in their souls, however, they are proud of the Independent fight, but they need the money. Others who sympathize with the movement and offered their support have answered the call of the almighty dollar offered them by the "Lily-white" republicans. A well-known Colored man who now holds a job with the administration said to the writer "I am with you heart and soul, but I have a job with the bunch and cannot afford to give it up at this time. Not only are you making a great fight for the race, but you are making it possible for us to make more money than we have ever made before. You have them on the run. [illegible] [they?] are letting the money loose. Keep up the fight I am with you [illegible] We ask who does the caption "Selling Out [illegible] It is the cry of men (?) who placate and apologize at the least flurry and who perform the "squating act" and "yassir," boss stunt, the cry of the lackeys; pussy footing stool-pigeons and tender footed parrots and pimps. It is the cry of the Judas Iscariot or Benedict Arnold of ebony hue posing as a leader, who would stoop to the lowest level to which the race or a race movement to get their personal mitts greased and have the nomen of "good nigger," and the devil can take the race so far as these selfish, narrow, hypocritical, lying, pussyfooters are concerned. The cry that leaders of the Independent movement have sold out is the cry of an ex-slave or those who see things as a slave, act as a slave, as subservient as a slave and says nothing and does nothing that does not meet the unqualified endorsement of "boss George." It is the cry of Negroes who would hoodwink and stall the public. but when the acid test comes they forthwith show their colors and fly straight to the camp of the enemy and yell "Wolf! Wolf!" when no such animal was ever in sight. They are simply tools of and to those who would hold the race back, are racial traitors and are not deserving of the beautiful rays of the sun kissing their tratorous face and their existence is one of the freaks of nature. They will go to their political bosses and tell lies on members of the race, and then spread the same paid for propaganda among their own people that they too may join the other forces in condemnation of that means for the forward, onward and upward trend of he race. Such Negroes are lackeys of the deepest dye and will find hell very uncomfortable for them. If there are seven hells, these palliating puppets and conspiring curs will go bouncing through the first six hells like a rubber ball and great will be their reception by the imps of satan. The Lincoln Independent party is headed by men, not lackies, such as those who make infamous charges against them, and men must be our stentorian cry, and let us resolutely dedicate ourselves to the task of making the race safe from its internal enemies, the greatest setback to our racial advancement, progress and solidarity. Billy Sunday appeals to southern prejudice and emotions Only four Negroes in seats We heard Billy Sunday in his address at the State Fair last Tuesday. With remarkable enthusiasm he plunged into an hour's address, making an appeal for higher patriotism. While Louisville and Kentucky did not fall over themselves to get out and hear or see the base ball evangelist, a fairly good crowd was there. The building was about half filled. The space for about two hundred enclosed by a board fence, under a large placard sign, "For Colored people only," contained about four Negroes, the other ten or more present stood in the crowd throughout the address rather than sit under the cursed Jim Crow sign. Sunday flayed all foreign born, and conscientious war objectors, and repeatedly used the term "nigger" and "old nigger." He reached his climax in ruging the protection of womanhood. Said he: "One thing I like about you men of the South, you protect your women, and you don't always wait to hold coroner's inquests or for juror's decision." The above is seen as an almost open endorsement of the lyncher's rope and torch. How much of the spirit of Jesus Christ there is in a preacher of that kind of heart the public is left to judge. In each side of the building where this actor-preacher spoke were large signs saying: "Louisville wants Billy Sunday in 1922." But so far as the Louisville Negro is concerned they don't need this type of preacher in 1922 or 2022. In all his big speech to one setnence asked even for any sort of consideration for the Negro. He only referred to member of the race in derision, and in the above words endorsed lynching. Scheduled Meeting of Klan Forbidden Republican Paper Carries Advertisement Refused By Courier, Times And Post EVERY EFFORT TO BE USED TO STOP MEETING At a conference Tuesday, participated in by Mayor Smith, Col. Ludlow F. Petty, chief of police, and the members of the Board of Public Safety, decision was reached not to permit the holding of the meeting of the Ku Klux Klan that was to be held some place in the city, to be announced this morning, with an address by a Rev. Ridley, the announcement of which was carried in a whole page advertisement of The Louisville Herald, Wednesday morning. In the opinion of the city officials it is the "duty of people who own or lease meeting places as patriotic citizens to refuse to rent a hall for the purpose indicated." In a statement issued by he Board of Safety at the close of the conference people generally are asked not to go to the meeting if it should be held or an attempt should be made to hold it. Any one attempting to attend the meeting will be regarded as an "unpatriotic citizen and a law violator and will be dealt with accordingly," the statement says. It follows: "Several weeks ago the mayor announced that he would employ every lawful means to preevnt the organization of a Ku Klux Klan in Louisville. "The Board of Public Safety, acting in accord with the mayor, hereby [serves?] notice on the persons in Louisville promoting this organization that the meeting advertised for Saturday night will not be permitted. The Board also says to all owners or lessees of public halls in Louisville that it is their duty as patriotic citizens to refuse to rent a hall to this organization, and it serves notice on all citizens to remain away from this meeting or the vicinity of this meeting should an attempt be made to hold it in defiance of this order, and any person who attempts to attend this meeting will be regarded as an unpatriotic citizen and a law violator and will be dealt with accordingly." Members of the Board of Safety refused to reveal their plans as to the methods to be employed in stopping the meeting, but declared that it was not going to be held, unless those promoting it secured an injunction in court against city officials. THE HERALD'S FULL PAGE KU KLUX KLAN AD The attitude of the daily papers in connection with advertising matter of the Ku Klux Klan meeting that was to be held here tonight has been discussed by colored people on the street corners and in their homes. It cannot be understood why the same full page advertisement of the meeting was carried by the Louisville Herald of Friday morning, a Republican newspaper, the official mouthpiece of the Republican leaders, and refused by the Courier Journal, the Times and the Evening Post, Democratic organs. And while it was argued by those who were inclined to be independent in politics, that all along, the Courier Journal, the Times and the Post, Democratic newspapers, had been favorable toward the colored people in the publication of race news, etc., than the Herald, and more especially had the Post shown more broadness and bigness in its attitude toward the race editorially and in its news columns, it was pointed out that in view of the fact that the Republicans were resorting to every means to hold the Colored vote i November, that the Herald might have used a little better judgment in the case of the Ku Klux Klan advertisement. It is remembered that the Courier Journal in its Tuesday morning editorial, carried a strong editorial against the [Klan?] organization, giving reasons why [the?] paper had refused to carry the full page Klan advertisement. It was pointed out in last week's issue of the Leader, that little space was ever given to our group by the Herald excepting during political days when some member of the race, the hireling of the Republican party saw fit to express his opposition to some other members of the race who had just a little bit more manhood and independence than he did. We call our readers' attention to the fact that not during the whole of a race man's campaign for councilman in 1919, was his name mentioned in the Herald, but the moment he disrobed the garb of a colored man, a candidate for office on the Republican ticket and got in the more favorable and fitting apparel of a colored man for office, the Herald lets loose more than a column of its precious space in race news matter. The contrast between the Republican and Democratic papers in regard to the Ku Klux Klan is something for those who oppose the Lincoln Independent party to think about. National Press Watching Independent Movement Bring the Family. Every man, woman and child will be there. Come and bring the whole family for each day's outing and night's program. Let you rbaby enter for a News and Leader prize for the three most perfect babies at Lion Garden Saturday at 4 o'clock.
