Description	Leaf from a twelfth century theology book, copied at the Monastery of Citeaux in France. The book was written on animal skins since paper was not used in Europe at that time, and was intended for study or for reading aloud within the monastic community. The leaf, which has 50 lines in two columns, is a fragment of a commentary on the Epistles of St. Paul, compiled from the works of twelve patristic writers by Carolingian writer Florus of Lyons. Goff notes that this compilation sometimes has been wrongly attributed to Bede. The Monastery of Citeaux was the center of the monastic order of Cistercians. The unornamented style, while common for texts written primarily for study, nevertheless reflects the austerity of the Cistercian Order's strict observance of the Rule of St. Benedict. The mid-twelfth century date of this manuscript places it at the time of Bernard, who founded the neighboring abbey at Clairvaux in 1115. Marginal prickings used for ruling the guide-lines of text are visible along both sides of the leaf. On the verso, lines six through eleven, crude Greek letter forms have more regular forms written above. The text may demonstrate a common Cistercian use of punctus flexus, a punctuation mark resembling a "2" over a dot that signals a mid-sentence pause where, in texts read aloud, the tone of voice drops. A new Latin edition of this work, with introductory essays in French and bibliographical references, appears as Flori Lugdunensis Collectio ex dictis XII partum, edited by R. Demeulenaere.
