Object Description
Title | Bible, France, mid 13th century, fragment. |
Description | Leaf from a small portable Gothic Bible, copied in France in the thirteenth century. The Latin translation used throughout this period was known as the Vulgate, since Latin was the common or vulgar language read by all literate people of the time. The leaf includes 49 lines of text in two columns with the text densely blocked on the leaves of finely shaved vellum to allow the entire Bible to be carried as one consecutive book in a single binding. The text is heavily abbreviated, in keeping with the practice of the time, with first letters of syllables or words followed by conventional strokes or crossbars. The text is from the first book of Kings, chapters XVII – XX. The development of standardized chapters evolved in the classrooms of Paris, Europe's earliest universities, in the first quarter of the thirteenth century. Known as Paris Bibles, these copies included the books in a set order, with 64 prologues, including several unique to the Paris Bible. This leaf is written in a formal Gothic book hand, Gothic Textura Quadrata, including contrasting colors of capitals in the running heads of the chapter's numeration and a calligraphic marginal ornament. The top edge of this particular leaf is cropped and mended with vellum on the top corner. Marginal annotations in two different hands are in the left and bottom margins of the verso. |
