Object Description
| Title | Book of Hours, France, early 16th century, fragment. |
| Contributors | Hardouyn, Germain, fl. 1500-1541 (printer) |
| Description | Leaf from a Book of Hours, a book used for private prayers, written by hand on a sheet printed with woodblock borders. The Book of Hours originally including this leaf was made in Paris around 1524. The leaf is from a supplemental section, the Hours of the Holy Spirit, sometimes added to Books of Hours. These supplements included additional prayers, often shorter than the prayers provided in the Hours of the Virgin. This leaf includes 29 lines of handwritten text and rules set within printed borders and bears a signature: c viii, on the recto. The compatability of moveable type and woodcuts made illustrations and borders commonplace in early printed books. According to Febvre and Martin, French printers responded to the public appetite for ornamented Books of Hours by combining many small woodcut ornaments into complex borders. Here the detail of the woodcuts and crisp printing stand in contradiction to the irregular placement of the blocks within the border. This leaf is attributed to the Hardouyn family, one of several Parisian printers known for editions of Books of Hours. People making religious pilgrmages to cathedrals and shrines could purchase books from booths set up by scriveners or scribes near the entrances. A Book of Hours purchased in this manner might be the only book owned by a person or family. |
