Object Description
| Title | Antiphonary, France, 15th century, fragment. |
| Description | Leaf from a fifteenth century French antiphonary, representing a segment of text related to the Feast of the Crown of Thorns. Also called an antiphonal or antiphoner, an antiphonary collects portions of psalms and hymns sung during liturgies or worship services. The name references a Greek word meaning sung in response. Much of medieval church music was sung responsively, by alternating voices. Antiphonaries usually were large format books used by groups, sometimes entire choirs, during religious services. Unlike those types of antiphonaries which remained fixed in one spot within a worship space, this small, portable antiphonary may have been carried in processions. King Louis IX of France established the Feast of the Crown of Thorns in 1239 in response to a gift of the crown, believed to be an actual relic of Christ's Passion. The feast is celebrated on August 11. Square notation was used for musical texts from the twelfth through sixteenth centuries. Notators, the scribes who wrote musical notes, performed their craft separately from other scriveners. They used a rastrum, an instrument with multiple pen points, to achieve the regularly spaced lines of the staves. This leaf has 20 lines and is trimmed on all sides. One of the musical staves has three lines; otherwise all the staves are four lines with square notation. All the staves are lined in red, and the text and notation are in black with red and blue initial letters. The verso has a marginal note in red and black, cropped at the edge, but written in the same hand as the text. |
