Description | Books of Hours (Horae) were used for private prayers by lay people. Typically Books of Hours included a calendar, Gospel lessons, and hours of daily prayer including Hours of the Virgin, Hours of the Cross, and Hours of the Holy Spirit, as well as psalms and suffrages. Each Book of Hours featured a unique mixture of content, organization and decoration specified by the purchaser. Illustrations and ornaments often included religious symbols or biblical references. Books of Hours could range from highly expensive, illuminated works to those with less expensive printed illustrations, fully printed works, or those with no images at all. The introduction of the printing press allowed for a wider audience to own Books of Hours since printed illustrations were significantly less expensive than hand painted decoration. French printers in particular responded to the public appetite for ornamented Books of Hours by combining many small woodcut or metalcut ornaments into complex decorative borders. This leaf includes 21 lines of printed text on both the recto and verso set within metalcut borders on vellum. This leaf contains chapter 1, verse 26 through verse 38 of the Gospel according to Luke (recto). The leaf also contains a segment of chapter 2, verse 2 of the Gospel according to Matthew (verso). Each is accompanied by portraits of the evangelists. This leaf was likely printed by Philippe Pigouchet (active 1488-1518) for the publisher Simon Vostre. The illustrations on this leaf can be found in other Pigouchet-Vostre works, such as a Book of Hours for use of Rome published in 1498, and two published in 1496 (these works can be found in the Internet Archive). These works attributed to Pigouchet show how he combined a variety of small metalcuts to create unique borders for each page. |

Ornamentation | The text is printed within elaborate metalcut borders. The recto and verso each are composed of approximately 11 small, metalcut blocks. Initials are added in liquid gold on top of blue or brown paint. These appear on the recto and verso. The recto includes a decorative vertical border piece on the right hand side featuring floral designs, a bird, and an anthropomorphic figure. Decorative horizontal border pieces frame the top and bottom of the page. The right side of the recto features a bird in a nest, two biblical scenes with captions underneath, and an old man surrounded by floral designs. The bottom block features a secular scene with men and women gathered together, some playing musical instruments. An illustration of Saint Luke is set into the text; he is writing while seated next to a bull or ox. The verso includes the same decorative vertical border as the recto, but on the right hand side. The verso also is framed by decorative horizontal border pieces. The left side of the verso features a bird on a branch, two biblical scenes of Joseph in Egypt with captions underneath, and an image of a bird, likely a pelican feeding its young. The bottom block features another secular scene of boys or men playing a ball game. An illustration of Saint Matthew is set into the text; he is writing while seated next to a young man or boy. The secular scenes can be found in a variety of contexts throughout the other works by Pigouchet in the Internet Archive. |
