Guest Book, School of Music, University of Louisville
About the Guest Book
The guest book was begun in 1949 as the official guest book for the Louisville Orchestra Commissioning Series. Eventually the book evolved into the official guest book for the University of Louisville School of Music. The first volume, containing more than 900 signatures from visitors to the School of Music, including guest artists, composers, lecturers, and dignitaries, was nearly filled in 2011, when a second volume was created in the same style. Notable signatures found in the guest book include those of Aaron Copland, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Hillary Clinton, among many others. Also included in the book are signatures from all winners of the world-renowned Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. Among the most treasured historical items in the School of Music, the guest books are housed at the Dwight Anderson Music Library.
James Procell coordinated the Music Library’s work for the digitization of the guest book, and created the appendices for the second volume. Mark Dickson created the index and, with Joy Stephens, Rachel Hodge, and Donald Dean, the annotated list for the guest book, and Dan Collins and Molly O'Brien updated, proofread, and edited them, with the assistance of Andrew Rhinehart. School of Music faculty assisted with identifications.
Rachel I. Howard coordinated the digitization and metadata of the guest book. Erin-Michal Brink scanned the guest book pages (up through page 156) as 600 ppi TIFF images in September 2009 using a BetterLight overhead scanning setup with a Linhof Kardan M camera and Rodenstock 135mm lens. Rachael Ritter continued the scanning of the 2009-2010 pages in August 2010, and Rachel I. Howard scanned pages from Volume 2 in 2014. Rachel I. Howard created the metadata and uploaded the scans, converting them to JPEG2000 format in the process, using CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software.
Terri L. Holtze designed the HTML pages.
