A woman in a long dress with a sign reading 'Dry ' pinned to her shoulder stands in the street with three children , holding as placard reading "Don't let the Saloon have a chance at us. " The woman may be Jean Thomas , and the messages indicate that she supported the Temperance movement to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages ; Temperance principles were enacted into law in the United States during Prohibition (1920-1933) .
