UNIVERSITY of LOUISVILLE
SCHOOL OF LAW
FEBRUARY 1962
To the Alumni and Friends of the School of Law:
The product of the School of Law is its graduates
and we are proud to introduce the members of the 1961-62
graduating class to you through this brochure.
The faculty is not only concerned with giving each
student a sound legal education and in instilling in him the
ideals of a great profession but also in assisting him to
find suitable and worthy employment upon graduation.
In this endeavor the Student Bar Association has
aided us tremendously by the preparation of this excellent
brochure. Ed Briscoe, Ernest J. Eubanks and the other
members of the committees are to be commended for their
outstanding work in getting together the material and in arranging
for its pub.lication.
If you have an opening or know of one for a young
lawyer, we hope that this brochure will be of help in filling
it. Inquiries concerning any of the individuals mentioned
herein may be directed to me or to the person concerned.
All of us thank you for your continued interest 1n
the School of Law.
Cordially,
Marlin M. Volz
Dean
GENERAL INFORMATION
The School of Law was organized in 1846 and is the
second oldest law school in the South.
Its faculty consists of ten professors who devote
their entire time to teaching, and several part-time members
chosen by reason of their special fitness for their subjects.
The School of Law has over two thousand graduates.
An unusually large number of these have been successful
at the bar and are prominent in the public life of the state
and nation.
In 1950 the Jefferson School of Law, which was
established in 1905, was merged with the School of Law.
As a result of this merger, a Part-time Division in which
evening classes are offered was opened making both day
and evening classes available.
The School of Law meets all the requirements of the
national accrediting agencies. It is on the approved list of
the following organizations:
I. Association of American Law Schools
II. The American Bar Association
III. New York Board of Regents
OBJECTIVES OF SCHOOL OF LAW,
UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE
It is generally recognized among the better law
schools that a mere knowledge of legal rules is insufficient
training for the bar. Such knowledge must be accompanied
by a broad understanding of American and English Common
Law, American Constitutional Law, and certain fields of
statutory law, together with the ability, judgement, and technique
to use this knowledge in the solution of legal problems.
Emphasis, therefore, is placed upon logical and original
reasoning in the solution of legal problems. The "case
system," which involves free discussion of the facts and
principles involved in cases decided by the courts rather
than an effort to memorize rules, is the chief method of
instruction.
The University of Louisville School of Law has
the above general aims, and in addition includes the following
objectives in its program of instruction:
1. It emphasizes the social purpose and stg-nificance
of law by approaching legal problems in relation
to their social and economic background, and by providing
special lectures from the fields of the social sciences who
present non-legal materials and relate them to the law, to
the end that the students will gain a comprehensive view of
the functions of law in society.
2. It gives students practical training tn deal-
ing with problems such as they will have in the practice of
of law, to the end that they shall be as self-sufficient and
independent when they enter practice as it is possible to
make them.
3. It not only prepares students for practice tn
any state, but also offers special opportunities for gaining
knowledge of Kentucky law to those primarily interested in
practicing in this state.
4. It recognizes its obligations to the public and
the legal profession by seeking to improve law through
scholarly research and by conducting an extensive program
of continuing legal education.
To accomplish these objectives, four agenctes, tn
addition to intensive training in the procedural courses, are
used: 1. The Practice Court, in which students try moot
cases; 2. The Briefing Service Staff composed of selected
students who prepare briefs for lawyers all over Kentucky;
3. The Judicial Assistance ship Program in which senior
students sit with Judges of the Jefferson County Circuit
Court on Rule Day to learn procedures firsthand and to lend
the Judges their research assistance; 4. The Legal Aid
Society; and 5. Other activities in the Legal Workshop group.
BRIEFING SERVICE
The purpose of this organization is to offer a service
to lawyers throughout the State of Kentucky, who, by reason
of limited library facilities, are unable to examine all the
authorities on questions of law before them. Lawyers are
invited to send in such questions after having exhausted
their facilities. The members of the Staff take each question
and, by means of the library at their command, prepare
and return to the lawyer a complete brief on the question
submitted. This service is rendered without charge.
Many benefits flow from such work, for not only
does it render a helpful service to the bar of the state, but
it also gives the student the kind of experience that he will
need in the practice.
Membership on the Briefing Staff is based upon high
scholarship and general efficiency.
JUDICIAL ASSISTANTSHIP PROGRAM
Through the cooperation of the judges of the J efferson
Circuit Court, two senior students are permitted to
serve with each cooperating judge as an assistant and to
sit with him on Rule Day and see justice administered firsthand.
The program gives students practical training in courtroom
technique and practice, and enables the students to
see the problems faced by judges in the trial and handling
of cases.
The cooperating judges receive assistance from the
students, especially in the field of legal research.
The program is especially valuable for those students
who expect to practice in the Louisville area in that they
become personally acquainted with the judges in whose
courts they will later be practicing, and they have opportunity
to become acquainted with lawyers with whom they
may become associated, and with whom they will be
practicing.
LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF LOUISVILLE
Selected second and third-year law students under
the supervision of a faculty adviser serve on the staff of
the Legal Aid Society where they work under the direction
of licensed attorneys in providing free legal services to
persons unable to pay for the services of an attorney. Participation
in the work of the Society affords the student
practical experience in interviewing clients, analyzing
facts, investigating the law, preparing legal documents,
attending court, and the like.
JOURNAL OF FAMILY LAW
In cooperation with the Family Law Committee of
the Association of American Law Schools, the School of
Law publishes a scholarly journal devoted to the important
subject of family law. National authorities in the field
serve as members of an advisory board. Selected students
serve on the editorial board with the assistance of a faculty
adviser.
THE LOUISVILLE LAWYER
The School of Law publishes a newspaper quarterly
containing items of interest concerning the School and its
affairs, the Student Bar Association and other student
activities, and the Alumni. The object of the paper is to
maintain close connection and 'cooperation between the
School, the student body, and the Alumni. Selected students
edit the paper under the direction and supervision of a
faculty adviser, thereby gaining editorial experience. In
each issue a law review article written by a faculty member
or leading member of the bar and a case note written by a
student are published.
THE LAW LIBRARY
The library of the Law School is one of the most
complete in the State of Kentucky and among the best in
the entire South . It has over 46 ,000 volumes which have
been well selected with the idea of making the library as
complete and practical as possible. Among the special collections
are the papers of Mr. Justice Brandeis and Mr.
Justice Harlan.
