LAWYERS DECLARE WAR ON COURT HUSTLERS TWO CITY HALL JANITORS NAMED CONSULT COMPTROLLER AS THREAT MADE TO EXPOSE WHOLE "SORDID MESS" Following a daily press story in which City Controller. Charles Roser, is alleged to have named two Negro janitors of the City Hall as police hustlers, at the insistence of members of the Lincoln Bar Association, several colored lawyers declared "war" on hustling activities of the court and threatened to expose the whole "sordid mess." Action on the alleged hustling came to a head last Monday morning when a committee of race lawyers and bondsmen sought the aid of Controller Roser in settling their difference. The lawyers committee headed by Attorneys, J. A. Crumlin, Benjamin H. Shobe and C. Ewbanks Tucker, complained that Tom Wallace, a professional bondsman, solicited clients for several white lawyers in conjunction with his bond making activities. Wallace denied the charge. At this meeting, which was held prior to the release carried in the daily papers, Tucker said he wanted to go on record as saying the whites in police court are as guilty as the colored. The janitors are just a part of a general "un-ethical" practice prevalent among some police court practictioners, he said. The hustling complained of by the attorneys is in no measure confined to janitors or bondmen, Atty. Ben H. Shobe declared as he recalled the resignation of Mrs. Wright, former deputy clerk of the police court, who resigned under questionable circumstances several weeks ago. Witnesses told police Childs had Lewis down and was cutting him when Lewis shot him through the thigh, the neck and through the kidney and liver. Childs was found leaning against a bed with powder burns on his white shirt when the coroner arrived. According to police, the argument started when Childs accosted Dorothy Copeland and Elsina Stone of 632 South 10th Street and tried to get Miss Copeland to go to her apartment with him. The officers said Childs started to beat the young woman after she refused. To avoid the beating, she started up stairs with the angry man whipping her every step of the way. Lewis entered the disturbance when Agnes Watkins, a bystander called the manager. Claiming self defense, Lewis was arraigned in police court Monday morning, Aug. 18. His bond was set at $500 and the case continued until September 22. Arresting officers were Detectives R. Kilgore, James Huggins and Capt. Michot of the 2nd District.
