Description
Full-length portrait of actress Helena Modjeska standing in front of a backdrop featuring a tree and ferns , wearing a hat tied beneath her chin with a ribbon , a cape trimmed with fringe , and a long dress . Mme . Helena Modjeska , born October 12 , 1840 in Cracow , Poland , was a leading Polish actress who became even more famous after emigrating to the United States in 1876 and producing the Helena Modjeska Repertory . She married Charles Bozenta Chlapowski , with whom she toured , and also went by the names Helena Modjeska Chlapowski and Countess Bozenta . She appeared at Macauley's Theatre at least eleven times between 1878 and 1906 . While in Louisville , a local confectioner named a candy in her honor : the Modjeska is a caramel-covered marshmallow . She died April 9 , 1909 . Location of photo studio : New York (N.Y.)
