A young barefoot girl in a well-worn dress is being consoled by a nun in an oval-shaped image . Kate Matthews frequently persuaded relatives and neighbors to pose in tableaux vivants , or living pictures , based on fairy tales , books , or poems . This appears to be one of those tableaux , perhaps based on "Sister Dolorosa " by Kentucky author James Lane Allen . Title supplied by cataloger .
