Description |
"Under the title 'Le Paradis des Negres' or 'Black Paradise,' photographs of two young women are juxtaposed in typical Surrealist fashion. The first, a young woman from the Congo, is posed naked against a backdrop of the forest's long grass. [...] By contrast, the second image shows a confident, stylishly dressed woman seated at a typewriter, surrounded by the trappings of urban life. Its caption, 'The Next Year in Harlem,' completes this shocking diptych contrasting primitive existence and civilisation." (Afro Modern, p.27); "Published in the topical magazine 'Varietes' that circulated in Paris in 1929, this image formed part of a more complex photographic layout that allowed coupled photographs to relate to others." (Afro Modern, p.28). |
