Description
Discovered in Rome on the Aventine Hill . "In this portrait , Caligula is shown seated . The body does not correspond to the head , which was subjected to numerous repairs over the course of the nineteenth century , when it was part of the Campana collection , but this pose was commonly used in imperial statues and is seen in depictions of emperors when they are shown in divine form . […] In the case of the Louvre statue , the absence of divine attributes suggests that the emperor is being shown in his political role . Seated as if ready to grant an audience to standing supplicants , his pose demonstrates power. " (Excerpt from catalogue entry by Daniel Roger , p . 78) . Purchased in 1861 , formerly in the Campana collection (MA 1267-INV . MR CP 6406 ; MNE 837) . Restorer : Ch . Devos , 2005 .
