Description
A paved road within a mountain setting curves along a bend . To the right of the road is the Cumberland River and to the left is a mountain covered with trees . More tree covered mountains are in the distance . Handwritten on border of negative "Bell Co . The Cumberland River meets the Rhododendron Highway at Cardinal , Ky. " The Rhododendron Highway was a 35-mile paved portion of the longer Mayo Trail , Eastern Kentucky's first major public roadway project . The portion that made up the Rhododendron Highway was paved in 1928 . U.S . Route 119 follows the original roadbed . Portions of this road are also referred to as Pineville-Harlan Road .
