Baptist
seminary
in
London
,
Kentucky
is
a
simple-lined
brick
building
with a
two-story
mid-section
with a
pediment
supported
by
square
brick
pillars
, and
two
one-and-a-half-story
wings
. A
man
in a
suit
stands
on the
porch
, and
two
barefoot
boys
in
white
shirts
and
dark
breeches
stand
close
by in the
yard
holding
a
bucket
between
them. A
path
with an
undefined
edge
leads
up
to the
porch
. The
building
played
a
role
in a
political
drama
a
few
years
earlier
:
when
the
results
of the
gubernatorial
election
of
1899
were
disputed
, the
Democratic
candidate
,
William
Goebel
, was
shot
while
entering
the
state
capitol
building
in
Frankfort
,
Kentucky
, in
January
1900
, and
died
a
few
days
later
.
Responding
to the
incident
, in
which
he was
later
indicted
as an
accessory
,
William
S
.
Taylor
, the
Republican
candidate
who
had been
inaugurated
as
governor
,
called
a
special
session
of the
legislature
in
Republican-leaning
London

Kentucky
.
Democrats
refused
to
participate

instead
meeting
in
Democrat-leaning

Kentucky
