Description	The opening ceremonies of the 1904 World's Fair at the Plaza of St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri. A crowd, seated on wide benches, faces two men at a podium at the base of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Monument. The monument bears the words of Robert R. Livingston, agent for the United States at the signing of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty: "The treaty we have signed has not been brought about by finesse nor dictated by force. Equally advantageous to both the contracting parties, it will change vast solitudes into a flourishing country." Secretary of War (and later U.S. President) William Howard Taft is to the left of the stairs leading up to the podium. Another crowd stands facing the Festival Hall, an ornate building with two-story rotunda. Stamped on lower left corner: 4438. Stamped on lower right corner: Copyrighted 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Co.
